Shouldn't Al Sharpton offer an award? Oh wait this incident did not involve a white cop... sorry, my mistake.

Mae - I lived in Hamilton Heights on 142nd and Edgecombe Avenue for three years until last month. It was a good neighborhood and I would still be there if I could afford the rent! It is still a bit dodgy in the Strivers Row area, so you will want to talk to a couple of people at the apartment to get a feel for the area before you make any commitments. Good luck with the search!

Only a 101-year-old woman could tell the media to beat it and blow off a meeting with a District Attorney because she had a card game, all while her Senator and Presidential hopeful was talking about her.

I would vote for a Rose Morat / Elize Solangee ticket for any office, except I know they have much better things to do.

I think we should chuck the "hate crime" distinction and just replace it with the "despicable crime" category. Like some people describing porn: it's hard to define, but you know it when you see it.

If this is a hate crime ( which it should be) then let's take a look at how we ALL treat our elders.
We can call people racist, but what about the way seniors are treated. Stop calling them granny and treating then as if they are not all there. RESPECT YOUR ELDERS, you will be one someday if you are lucky!!!

I am very glad that this may be classified as a "hate Crime" and they are looking to up the punishment for punks who prey on the senior citizens. I want this tape to be on a loop in whatever detention facility he eventually gets lodged in.

What I am dissapointed in is that the media whores have used this tape of the 101 year old woman to boost their ratings and have not contributed any money to the fund to catch her attacker.

You know that this piece of human refuse must have some pals who would be willing to sell him out if the price is right.

Have you all seen the interview that was aired of the 101-year-old woman? She's so unbelievably charming and sweet. She's more rational and sharp than most of the people I come across each and every day.

What an amazing woman. And she's a happy person as well. I dunno. Guess she really moved me.

Since I am contemplating moving to Harlem, I wonder if the safety of the area is increasing - - or decreasing. There is a great apartment for rent on Strivers Row - - but it is a rowhouse with no doorman. I saw it listed here: nycdweller.blogspot.com - - and I'd like to hear from residents who live around West 138th and Adam Clayton Powell Blvd - - whether you have reassurances or horror stories. Will check back on the postings at Gothamist later.

"The reality is crime reduction is and has been a top priority for this administration."

So, then, republican'ts... tell me why it was President Clinton who put together the funding to put more than 100,000 additional policemen on the streets of American cities, but George Bush felt it was more important to give Paris Hilton and Exxon a tax cut than renewing that funding?
