Pencil This In

DANCE: A little while ago we told you about Matthew Bourne's adaptation of Tim Burton’s cult classic Edward Scissorhands into a dance performance. Scissors...dancing...sure, why not? The show opens tonight, and from what we've seen on the commercials that have been running - seems to capture the essence of the movie.

7pm // BAM Howard Gilman Opera House, 30 Lafayette Ave [Fort Greene] // $30-$80

READING: Spy Magazine co-founder Kurt Anderson will be reading at Barnes and Noble tonight. His latest book, Heyday, follows a 19-century Englishman to, where else, the Bowery.

7pm // Barnes & Noble [1972 Broadway] // Free

THEATER: In Orson Welles’s 1955 TV production Moby Dick Rehearsed, a Shakespeare company cancels their rehearsal of King Lear when Welles arrives and announces that they will be tackling Melville’s masterpiece instead. (And guess who gets to play Ahab?) Twenty Feet Productions has recently revived Welles’s monomaniacal effort; in it the stage becomes the decks of the ship on which the cast chases the white whale. The Times calls it a “gripping revival” and directs us to this juicy clip of Welles getting all Master Thespian with the tome:

8pm // Richmond Shepard Theatre [309 E 26th St] // Tickets cost $15

MUSIC: Some big names playing in town tonight - The Shins at the Theater at Madison Square Garden, The Pogues at Roseland. If you're up for something smaller, head to Mercury Lounge where Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Magic Cyclops and The Scourge of The Sea are playing. We've heard lots of goodness about the latter band.

7:30pm // Mercury Lounge [Houston at Essex] // $10
