Apparently New York is slowly but surely being taken over by frozen yogurt establishments. Both the traditional press and food bloggers have spoken volumes about Pinkberry, a West-coast chain known affectionately as "Crackberry" for its addictive qualities. Since we first reported on it in October, there have been articles in the New York Sun, the New York Times, and posts from Restaurant Girl and Off the Broiler. But a challenger to Pinkberry arrived recently -- Yolato, where, according to today's NYT dining section "the creaminess of gelato meets frozen yogurt’s refreshing tang." Yolato's first location opened in January, and its second opened today, and the Pinkberry empire has plans to open two more Manhattan locations.
When we covered the arrival Pinkberry, one reader wondered how it compared with "the "real frozen yogurt" native to New York - that at Forty Carrots in Bloomingdale's." Well, we're going to find out for you. The Gothamist Food team is on it -- we'll try a yogurt from Forty Carrots, Pinkberry, and Yolato, and let you know our thoughts on each. Anywhere else you'd like us to go? Let us know in the comments.

What about Tasty D yo?
I am very tired of Tasti-Delite and glad to hear about new frozen treat places - - especially if they are in the Village. :-D
"Real" frozen yogurt is reeeally easy to make at home.
-Take a container of FAGE or other Greek-style yogurt and place in freezer until frozen.
-Take out of freezer and defrost a wee bit until it is still frozen but not a complete rock.
-Put in food processor with a little dash of soy or cow milk until smooth.
For different flavors, try adding a dash of vanilla or adding frozen berries to the processor.
Voila! I make this all the time.
...you can also add a pinch of sugar for more sweetened fro yo if you aren't into the au natural flavor.
Tasti-D is not yogurt.
i thought pinkberry was total crap. like a frozen cup of regular yogurt. gimme my frogurt in a crazy flavor like reeces or double chocolate fudge, not in blahberry. tasti-d all the way!

OMG pinkberry is amazing! not as good as 40 carrots, but that's probably because of the difference in fat content. it's also really good if you take it home and put it in your freezer for a bit--it gets more icy :)
Can you also try another new fro yo place, "Yolato" on MacDougal?
Thanks Smitty for the homemade froyo recipe. Sounds fabulous....I'm trying that tonight!
Mmmm... I love love LOVE the yogurt at Forty Carrots. I have literally made three different people into complete addicts of the stuff. Just had some the other day at Bloomie's in Soho. Yum.
Love Love Love 40Carrots I used to work in Bloomies many years ago and would eat it for lunch everyday !! Anytime I go to Bloomingdales I have to have one with melba sauce or honey I can't see Pinkberry being any better than that
I have tried tasti-d and pinkberry, haven't ventured to yolato yet. But I'll tell you, my best frozen yogurt experience so far was in Canada at Yogen Fruz. The taste was exquisite.
