City Gets Ready for Sean Bell Grand Jury Findings

2007_03_nypdcars.jpg

With the grand jury delivering a decision about the Sean Bell shooting case any moment, the city is on alert. The Mayor met with Queens community leaders yesterday. Mayor Bloomberg also called Bell's mother, fiancee Nicole Paultre-Bell, and the Reverend Al Sharpton. The Mayor said:

We are very sensitive to emotions and I don't expect any trouble. People have a right to express themselves. Some people will be happy no matter what, some people will be disappointed.

No matter what happens there will be people who feel that there were not enough indictments and people who feel that there were too many indictments.

Mayor Bloomberg is hoping for calm, but Sharpton has said he'll ask for a special prosecutor if he's not satisfied with the grand jury's findings. And while some community members want calm as well, they believe some neighborhoods may be very upset if there are no indictments.

The grand jury will decide if any of the five police officers involved with the November shooting of three unarmed men, Sean Bell, Joseph Guzman and Trent Benefield, should face criminal charges. The police fired 50 times, killing Bell, while Guzman and Benefield were wounded. Lawyers for the police officers involved think that undercover detective Gescard Isnora, who fired the first shot, and Detective MIchael Oliver, who fired 31 times (reloading once), are "most vulnerable" for indictment. What do you think the grand jury will do?

And the NYPD has put 1,700 officers on duty to be ready for any unrest - though the police claim it's because there are a number of events - a health care rally, St. Patrick's Day Parade, anti-war protest - in the next few days.

What the fuck does Sharpton have to do with all of this if HE'S "not satisfied" with the findings?

What a scumwad.

Last night, they mentioned there were 4,000 cops scattered around. Some in plainclothes. (meaning sports jerseys, faded jeans and windbreaker)
NY1 mentioned they were in Queens and for some reason at Al Sharton's HQ.
NO justice, NO PEACE!

There is no way the police officers in this tragedy can get a fair trial, since they have been condemned by a known liar. Let us just all call this a tragedy and move on.

this is a horrible tragedy, with no winners. we're all losers in this scenario. there are rumors that Oliver is an ex-iraqi-soldier/iraqi-veteran. is there any truth to this? if so, responsibility goes well beyond the police officers and civilians involved in this unlucky event.

What the hell does being an ex-Soldier have to do with any of this? There are a great deal of cops out there who are ex-mil. It's no big deal.

Maybe when you don't try to run folks over, you don't get shot.

hey, toby, bet you're white, huh? ever see that twilight zone where the racist woke up as a black man being chased by the klan? if, indeed, you are white, let's hope you get a taste of that white person. maybe then you will know how many blacks feel and why it is not easy to "just move on!"

i'm white and do not pretend to know what it means to "walk/drive/whatever while black," but i do try to empathize and commit to change where i can as opposed to being glib and just saying, "well, it sux, but let's move on."

Not really. maybe there once were many ex-military but nowadays that's not true.
Very few are ex-military. You'd be surprised how few.

the question is, have we brought the 'war' home? Are these ex-soldiers being 'de-programmed' sufficiently once they leave the armed services? There is a difference between fighting overseas on the battlefield as a u.s. soldier (i.e., shooting to kill) and working as a police officer to apprehend suspects(i.e., innocent until proven guilty).

I can see how easy it would be for an ex-soldier to experience a war 'relapse' amidst a hail of bullet. Not quite sure if working in the nypd and carrying a gun and drinking alcohol is a suitable combination for an ex-soldier.

I hope the DA's office don't use those sterile photos of the officers involved.
Notice, it's the WHITE officers with a big grin on their face and the Black officers have a somber look.
That grin means, we'll beat ya and you can't do anything about it, in fact, we'll kill you and get away with it.

Funny.

I guess the majority of cops I've met were just lying about being NG or ex-mil.

Yeah.

I still stand by my post, in a force of 35,000, very few are ex-military. In fact, I bet many can't even handle being in the military.
funny, isn't it, ching?

"I guess the majority of cops I've met were just lying about being NG or ex-mil."

Hardly a scientific statistical method, really just more stupid commentary from "The Edge". Given the reports surfacing recently on how the military is failing to treat soldiers with post traumatic stress disorder, even sending soldiers with known diagnoses back in for second, third or fourth tours of duty with little more than a pat on the back and a handful of prozac, #4 and #9 raise a valid point about the suitability of war vets as law enforcement officers.

Shoot first and ask questions later is a failing strategy in the streets of Iraq, it's completely abhorrent to accept this behavior from public servants sworn to protect us in the city of New York.

Yes, because when you're getting shot at or about to get run over, you should ask them--in very polite tones--to stop what they're doing or else you MIGHT be forced to shoot them.

And it's unfortunate that these days, people are worrying more about coming under PTSD rather than causing it for the other guy.

Did Sean Bell have a gun? Was he firing at the police officers? The cops failed to identify themselves, they drew their weapons and pointed them at him. If someone pointed a gun at you while you were at the wheel of your car, would you not try to drive away? He didnt try to run them over, he crashed into their cars, they opened fire on him while he was trying to drive away. You are moron, and a hateful angry moron at that. I would love to see your performance under duress. My guess is you would end up as a smear on the concrete.

Cops Lie? You don't say?
"how not to get shot by the police" video, you're a funny one. Too bad, you're not as sharp as "the edge".

Well, so much for civility!

Bullets travel faster than cars, sir.

SP: oh, were you there? by the sounds of your babbling it sounds like you thought you were. you have no idea what actually happened.

*The cops failed to identify themselves*

Um... and you know this how?

We know because the grand jury is still deliberating and there are TWO witnesses.
That's Two more than any other civilian shooting in this City's history. That's how We know.
The Truth will Prevail. The Racist NYPD policies will be put to light.
The good ole boy network is over. The Thousand years is over.

Yeah, it's racist because at least two of the officers involved are black.

Or maybe just white cops wearing makeup? HMMMM... the conspiracies!

I know this because I READ. Do you? It seems like you are only adept at smug snide comments.

BTW, #12 -- I'm not Vietnamese. So... yeah. If that was supposed to be a racial insult, I gotta say, I'm not very insulted.

You're not very smart, too. ching.

Yeah, I guess not.

I can't hear the voices in your head, y'know. Just the ones in mine.

What are they expecting all blacks in the city to go nuts and riot ?

Al Sharpton should be in jail he advoided the IRS for so long. He gains money on tragedy like he cares. They should go to jail though cause the city will show kids its ok to murder if u are a cop

I HAVE A QUESTION for anyone who can answer. I live in Cincinnati, so I'm a little far from the what is going on. My question is, have any members of New York's City Council spoken out and condemned the NYPD for this event? Anyone who can give any info on the city council's reactions, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.
