WTC Remains Search Moves to West Street

2007_03_wtcremains.jpgThe city has announced that parts of West Street will be closed so searchers can look for remains from the World Trade Center attacks. Last October, Con Ed workers excavating a manhole found human remains, leading to renewed searches which have since yielded over 400 bone fragments.

According to the NY Times, a memo Deputy Mayor Edward Skyler sent to Mayor Bloomberg noted that closing West Street was necessary so workers could excavate recently discovered access ramps: "Without closing parts of West Street to allow workers to excavate the ramps beneath, officials would have to wait until its planned reconstruction by the state, expected in 2008 or 2009, the memo said." With an alternative like that, lane closures seem much more palatable.

Last fall, officials admitted that the initial search for remains was rushed, noting there was pressure to start development and promised to search thoroughly this go-around. Still, families and some local politicians wish the city would involve the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command, which has experience in body recovery, in the search.

Something they should have done from the start ! Clear the entire area first, Then start building up the land again !

Hey, you know what, they are DEAD. Can we move on yet? Is 5 1/2 years too early? Are we searching for teeth so we can clone these people? What is the end game here cause I'm confused?

Halting a project that will bring billions of dollars in revenue and probably thousands of jobs to the city is not compassionate, it's stupid. I do have sympathy for the the families of the dead, but why should the rest of the city have to suffer as well? These families need to realize this project is not just about them or their lost loved ones.

The problem is that commenters 1, 2, and 3 are all right, and the current efforts are committing more sins in the name of rectifying an old wrong. We need to stop ripping of this scab, and stop acting as if there is anyone in this community who is not entitled to their pain and their grief over their experiences that day. At some point, we just have to make the decision to move forward together knowing that it will never be enough to make things right.

The families need to leave the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) out of the picture. That agency is designed for the recovery of US servicemen lost in the line of duty. The 9-11 Families need to understand that if they keep insisting on JPAC's help they are literally stealing from the families of servicemen who have been missing for decades whose time window is rapidly closing.

There are former JPAC staffers working at the MEs office in NYC, they have the experience that the 9-11 recovery requires. Do you really want to take away from the already limited funding that JPAC has when you have the skills in your house already? The money won't be replaced and families who have been fighting for decades will have their efforts lost because 9-11 families don't understand what JPAC really does.
