Apple Cube's Momentary Adification

2007_03_cubead.jpgIt's advertecture gone wild! Well, it's wild for Fifth Avenue and 59th Street. Macrumors saw an ad being put on the cube at Apple's Fifth Avenue store yesterday.

The semi-transparent ad was for the new iPhone, but it was taken down later. We bet some ritzy neighbors complained and remind Apple about the city's crackdown on street advertising. Or remembered that the city granted Apple permission to build on the plaza if advertising was kept to a minimum (or something like that). A commenter on Macrumors says the ad was simply a "test." A test to see if they could get away with an ad, we think!

Unless Steve has as an iFusionReactor to go with iPhone you can expect that thing to need recharging twice a day. And then a $100 service fee to replace the battery they sealed inside.

Um, I think they placed it as they did because of the pedestrian traffic, most of which would be walking UP 5th Avenue towards Central Park and the store. Apple probably doesn't care if a bunch of taxi drivers see its ad.

  • Considering the exposure it has gotten in the blogosphere, I think the ad campaing was a partial success...

Don't really see what the big hoopla's about regarding the ad -- it doesn't seem to be all that obnoxious, if at all.

  • This is the Southern side of the cube. It would have made more sense to place the ad on the northern side of the cube so traffic could see it riding south on 5th Avenue.
