Last Night's Action: Rangers Smell Playoffs

2006_10_srangerslogo.jpg

  • Rangers 2, Hurricanes 1 (SO): This game was doubly delicious for the Rangers, who won and moved into a tie with the Hurricanes for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Even though Jaromir Jagr doesn't like shootouts, he's got to like the way the Rangers have played this week. With the exception of Saturday's stinker against Pittsburgh, the Rangers performed well over their last four games. They've gone 3-0-1, and all the games came against teams ahead of them in the standings. They still have work to do, but they could be coming alive at the right time.

  • In other local hockey news, Chris Simon received a 25-game suspension from the NHL on Sunday for his stick-to-face hit on Ryan Hollweg. If the Islanders play more than 25 games between the regular season and the playoffs, Simon won't be on the ice. If they play fewer, he'll sit out the balance next season before returning. Seems just -- that hit was unnecessary and unprovoked.

I'm no Islanders fan, but calling that hit 'unprovoked' is insane. You get cold-clocked from behind with a ref WATCHING it, get up with a concussion, and not be upset. He shouldn't have sticked anyone, but seriously - you wouldn't have all of your facilities/discretion their either. Watch the clip again.

I've watched the clip several times, and the only thing that happened to Smith was what almost everyone has called a clean hit from behind. Even if it were dirty, there is never an excuse for using a stick as a weapon to the face, I'm sorry.

Yeah, the stick to the face was totally unnecessary, he should've just fought with him like normal. What a pussy.

How convenient that Simon is now blaming a concussion for his actions - I've never seen a woozy guy swing his stick with intent to injure - they are lucky if they can make it back to the bench. His punishment is deserved.

WHAT?: I agree - it was not unprovoked.

Tom: I disagree - that sort of hit usually results in a 2 minute boarding call (minor penalty). Hitting from behind at the boards is illegal in hockey. Simon was not completely provoked, but clearly out of his mind when he hit Hollweg.

The suspension is certainly just, as it was vicious and horrendous. Even a goon like Chris Simon can understand that what he did was wrong.
