I haven't had a chance to see the movie yet but according to the All Movie Guide description of it on the NYT movie site, "Wu Qingyuan (Chang Chen) was born to a wealthy family in China, and as a boy he revealed a remarkable talent for Go, a Japanese board game played on a checkered board with black-and-white marbles, which can be moved in various patterns on the playing surface." FYI on the Imamura series, The Pornographers plays a week from Saturday, not this Saturday. My bad. But all of the Imamura movies are worth seeing so go both weekends!

go is from china, not japan, so there are lots of chinese go masters, i'd assume.
