For his actions in last night's Rangers-Islanders game, Islanders forward Chris Simon was suspended indefinitely today by the NHL. In the 3rd period of the game, a Rangers victory, Simon was checked cleanly into the boards by Hollweg. After recovering, Simon used his stick on Hollweg to retaliate - hitting Hollweg on the chin and knocking the Rangers center to the ice. After the hit, Hollweg laid motionless on the ice. He would later receive stitches and is expected to play tomorrow.
The NHL also informed Simon that there will be a disciplinary hearing tomorrow regarding the incident. It turns out that Simon actually suffered a concussion when he was knocked into the glass. Concussion or not, it hardly justifies the actions he took against Hollweg. The Nassau County district attorney is also investigating the incident to see if Simon committed a crime.

suspension depends on the severity of the accident. Since Hollweg was alright, he'll be back for start of next year. If he was knocked out/really hurt, we wouldn't be seeing Simon until next season, at best. Hockey is the best sport in the world, and moments like that don't help the public image.

If you want to get good sports analysis, go to ESPN. If you want to get half a clue about what's going on (but just half, this is gothamist) and then flame away at people like you, this is the place to be.

I am a huge Isles fan who has posted on the site frequently. I'm sure that no matter what I say, I'll get lambasted.
I posted on the "last night in NY sports" post earlier; I feel that Simon was right to retalitate a hit, that happens often. However, it in no way means that he retaliates in the brutal manner that he did. It was completely unbelievable!
Watching that game, I was speechless; and I see the Isles falling downward now.

Actual hockey fan here, but not a partisan of Islanders or Rangers. Rest of the season including playoffs if the NYI actually make them. Hard to understand why Simon didn't just beat the tar out of Hollweg .. since he weighs about 240 pounds and is a known tough fighter, he most likely could have.
I don't watch Hockey, Personally It's boxing/wrestling on ice to me . As I see it, Their will be a change coming to the sport in the future . You know the Government will stick it's ugly face in there and start creating rules . Much like they did with Baseball, And Football, One exception here is the reason for this intrusion will be for excessive ass whuppins on ice !!!
I'm a rangers fan and I really don't like the Islanders... but hitting people into the boards is the leading cause of death and paralysis in hockey.
Simon was concussed by a dangerous hit, and that's like making somebody drunk. What he did after wasn't his fault. I say suspend Hollweg.
Why doesn't this so called "sport" and its pathetic Minor League go away completely just like the XFL. I wish for the day when children (except Canadians) ask what was this game they used to play called "hockey"
I'm sure there are great things about hockey that I'll never learn about, because the only thing I *ever* hear about in hockey is fights and other degenerate shit like this. Due to the excessive fighting and violence that seems to be a major feature of hockey as it exists today, I put hockey as just barely one or two notches above cockfigthing and dogfighting. It is just totally uncivilized and degenerate for a popular sport to be this violent.
