Nineteen-year-old Kevin Brown was senteced to 3 1/2 years in prison for his brutal attack on two Chinese teenagers in Queens. Last summer, Brown and a friend, Paul Heavey, drove up next to a Lexus driven by Raymond Liang, John Lu and other Chinese friends. Brown and Heavey shouted slurs at them and rammed their car into the Lexus.
Liang drove away, and when Lu got out to check the damage on the car, Brown and Heavey re-appeared and started to beat him. Liang tried to intervene, but was beaten as well; he tried to reach for his car's "Club" but Brown and Heavey took it and used that to hit him as well.
While Brown initially tried to deny it was a hate crime, a witness overheard the pair yelling, "You g--k, stay out of our neighborhood," and they were charged with hate crimes, which carry much stiffer penalties, by the Queens DA. Now, Brown has admitted to attacking Liang and Lu because of their race. He also admitted that he attacked a father and son with a hammer in May. Brown's lawyer tried to get him sentenced to a halfway house, but a judge ruled that he should serve his term at an upstate prison.
The Daily News had a quote from City Councilman John Liu, who was visible at press conferences speaking out against the crime last year: "It would have been nice if Brown was man enough to say 'sorry' at the end A hate crime against one is a hate crime against all." And Heavey will be sentenced today.

What is up with violent crime in queens?
Is it 3 1/2 years or 31 1/2? Not be a stickler because I know a lot of people give Jen Chung problems over her grammar but maybe she should read her piece before putting it up. It would be the professional thing to do.

ONLY 3 1/2 years? Some criminal justice system...where violent, racially motivated crimes don't even get 5 years, but many 'victimless' crimes (IE NON-violent) can send folks away for well over a decade. Need to get those priorities in order and focus those harsh penalties on bastards like this fellow.

finally! when i was growing up in the 80's nothing was done when a bias crime against asians.
Well before you all convict the guy for his sins . Think about what the real story here is . Read what he said to the councilmen, "Stay out of our neighborhood" . What was the motive behind the comments? I'm not condoning what they did . It's appalling at best, Just look at what this person said and think about it . Sadly their are people in this world that can't seem to live at peace within themselves so they lash out at other's in an attempt to validate self worthiness .
Does it occur to anybody else that this kid struck a plea deal. He only admitted guilt to avoid 15 yrs. The initial story is 4 on 2 and the 4 asians had a weapon. C'mon this story is a complete farce and its appaling to see anyone land in jail for defending themselves. The media has a way of twisting a story around to make papers sell and sadly too many of you are falling for this. These asian kids deserve to be punished for attempting to jump 2 whites.

I love how whites are now making it seem like their the downtrodden ones. It's not that whites are angry at other minorities claiming oppression for selfish gain, they're angry because they can't play oppression Olympics like everyone else.
