Feral cat colonies are awesome! They also make a good quirky date. What girl doesn't like cats?

It is estimated we have 500,000 feral cats in Toronto, so I suspect New York has many, many more.

That's a really good point Elderta. I have a lot of stray cats in my neighborhood. I live on a block with a bunch of connected back yards and a few of us take care of the cats and they wander freely in all of our yards and periodically trap and spay or neuter the ones we can. I love the idea of being able to help support a cat colony somewhere though. I had no idea these organizations even existed.

I actually thought this would be good PR for the MTA, but I cave - I've taken down the address.

This is probably a colony that someone is taking care of, not necessarily the MTA. I really wish that Miss Heather had not posted the address. There are many people in NYC who take care of feral cat colonies. For more information, see:

New York City Feral Cat Council
and
Neighborhood Cats

There is a class you can take to learn how to set up and care for your own colony. Info here.

they're just quoting the article, so don't get all huffy. If you were to complain on the actual original story - then I would be right behind you.

Was it necessary to identify EXACTLY where they were found? Since a specific location was provided both here and on the original site I wonder if the MTA will remove these houses and the cats who live there? Will the person who so lovingly built the homes get in trouble or worse have to watch their work be destroyed? I get the fascination with the discovery but wouldn't it have been thoughtful to leave out the address in the interest of protecting one person's little corner of mercy?
