Mayor Bloomberg Keeps Hinting About 2008

2007_03_bloombergdinkins.jpgMayor Bloomberg has been denying that he will run for President in 2008, steadfastly maintaining that he will be Mayor for two full terms. Except yesterday, the billionaire mayor told Fox News "You never know", which instantly sprinkled fuel on the "Is he or isn't he running?" fire.

To accompany its Rudy Giuliani cover story, Newsweek has an article about Bloomberg's potential in 2008. His fortune is cited as a reason it'll be possible for him to emerge as a candidate later in the campaign process. And announcing candidacy later has its perks, since many people will be tired of candidates courting primary votes. A former aide tells Newsweek that Bloomberg "won't say anything until March of next year."

If the 2008 Presidential race were an all-New York election, who would you vote for: Hillary Clinton (D), Rudy Giuliani (R), or Bloomberg (Independent)? Last December, New York Magazine said Bloomberg would be like a "sane Perot" if he ran for president. And just last week, Mayor Bloomberg went to Harvard's Kennedy School of Government to accept an award. During his speech, he called the politicians in D.C. "dysfunctional" and emphasized the power of local government.

I suppose when the front runners are a black man, a woman, and an adulterer Republican, nothing could really be too strange to discount a victorious independent in 2008.

If Bloomberg runs, expect him to be the spoiler will let another hawk Republican to slip into the White House, like Nader in 2000.

Perhaps Bloomberg should concentrate on NYC, as he's not finished the job he said he's done.

Since 2001,

Affordability: Much LESS affordable than usual
Rents: Rose higher than usual, are highest in NYC history
Property taxes: MUCH higher than usual
Health: LESS people are insured
Homeless: Rose higher than usual
Crime: Starting to come back

Ask yourself how things are in NYC again. Oh wait, Bloomberg is doing a great job. His commercials told me so.

Mayor Mike for Prez all the way. If anyone from his campaign-to-be reads this, I would drop everything to work on that campaign. Just tell me what you need!

Apparently plaid is David Dinkin's favorite color.

BLOOMBERG/OBAMA '08!

... will carry about two districts nationally, both on the Upper West Side.

i'd def vote for Bloomberg if ran as an independent...I hate both parties so much

He'd be in already if he were serious.
All this hinting smells like he wants everyone to know he is available to play a role...

He wouldn't look too bad as VP compared to Cheney. But Indie Rep or Indie Dem I know not.

anti-Bloomberg,
what a well thought out post you provided. I never knew Bloomberg controlled interest rates and the value of the dollar-euro trade (i.e. two enormous reasons property values have shot up in New York).

And Bloomberg controls health insurance? Who knew!?!?!

#8, you can't read. Who knew?

I said "property taxes," which in 2002, Bloomberg raised by 18.5%, the highest in NYC history. I hope you're enjoying the taste of your foot.

PS: Bloomberg appointed Marvin "Markus to the Rent Guidelines board, a man who holds the record of the highest rent hikes for stabilized apartments. Bloomberg's appointees on the MTA board voted for substantial subway fare hikes, at higher rates than in any other period in NYC history.
And Bloomberg promised to insure children during his campaign.

"If Bloomberg runs, expect him to be the spoiler will let another hawk Republican to slip into the White House, like Nader in 2000."

With Bloomberg's bottomless campaign war chest? He's more like Perot in '92. Here's hoping the end result is the same: A Clinton in the White House!

Bloomberg should be in on the national debate. He's got nothing to prove and seems to enjoy addressing problems with solutions. Maybe the other candidates, whatever party they are in, could learn from that.
