Search for Missing Sex Offenders in NYC

2007_03_crosshairs.jpgAlarming news to start the workweek: The Daily News exclusively reports that the authorities are looking for "64 fugitive rapists, perverts and molesters" who have lied about where they live.

Many of the sex offenders gave home addresses at city housing projects. But federal law prohibits Level 2 and Level 3 offenders from living in public housing, so the feds went to evict some offenders - only to find out they were never living there. Well, we're glad the feds found out at some point that the sex offenders are missing, but this seems to give more ammo to the new plan to aggressively monitor sex offenders.

In the meantime, Department of Housing and Urban Development assistant special agent Frank Castrogiovanni says HUD is working with the NYPD to locate the offenders. He tells the News that if a sex offender doesn't give his correct address, it's a misdemeanor; if he gives a fake address a second time, then it's a felony. City Councilman Eric Gioia, who has been working with the feds, says, "These people have already committed some of the worst crimes known to man, and this should be a one-strike-and-you're-out policy."

Big surprise. I know someone who tried to report an offender who wasn't at the address listed in the registry. NYPD asked for the current address of the offender. Since that couldn't be provided, the cop said there was nothing they could do, wouldn't even take any further details. It's apparently normally not their job to find missing offenders. Seems it's our responsibility to know their faces and names and keep an eye out for them.
