Is Dov Charney more than the perverted genius behind American Apparel? Imnotsayin came close to catching the Splasher in action in Williamsburg, when he found what seemed like a freshly pasted Splasher manifesto with paint splashed on it. When he closely inspected the pasted signs, Imnotsayin found that the paint was actually pre-printed on the manifesto and there's an American Apparel ad with a half-naked guy and a paint splash printed onto the poster as well. Here's his theory, which actually makes some sense:
American Apparel IS the Splasher. Their clever marketing department cooked up the original Manifesto and began posting it and splashing prominent Faile, Obey, Banksy, etc works in key AA neighborhoods - the Lower East Side and Williamsburg, knowing it would spark a controversy among hipsters and artists.Brilliant! Our money is on Colonel Mustard, in the conservatory, with a bucket of wheatpaste! If American Apparel really is the Splasher or just seizing on the fame of the Splasher, Gothamist thinks the paint could blow up in Charney's face. The publicity would be nice, but we're guessing that his customer base likes street art more than the general public.Much to American Apparel's delight, prominent NY news outlets including New York Magazine and the NY Times picked up the story. The Times has run two stories, including a huge splash (sorry) on the front of Thursday's Metro section.
Delighted by the unexpected press, American Apparel decides to cash out, hiring a local street artist to paste up the mashed-up ads, and exposing itself as the culprit.
We're curious what Iron Mike Tyson thinks of this whole thing. After all, he is an expert on street art. Just look at his face. Not that would be able to make sense of what he's saying:

uhhh.... OR... WAY more likely- American Apparel sees controversial hipster art grafitti related news happening directly to it's own demographic, and decides to quickly capiltalize on the news by tying it into a new marketing campaign in order to get some free press out of it.
Or even MORE likely, whoever is putting these posters up is not the Splasher but is trying to say to the Splasher, "try this" as in encouraging them to Splash American Apparel ads rather than street art.
How would American Apparel benefit from the publicity in the Times when no one would have known at the time that it was AA behind it?
(I don't buy it by the way, too much at stake for AA)
man, if AA is the splasher, than that is ONE MORE reason to never shop there. Ruin art in the name of publicity and profit? fuck that. They already keep me OUT of their stores from their pseudo porno photo shoot advertising on the walls and in the dressing rooms, and this is just the last straw.
if it is AA, may the same treatment be dealt to their stores, their product inside the stores, and anyone who tries to stop the returned favor. if it is AA, and it's quite possible, it's really unfortunate that they're such whores for attention that they'd destroy some nice works.
Jeez, people. Do you believe EVERYTHING you read on the internet?
Stop already with the Splasher crap. Please. Stop.
See this is why all this new bullshit street art sucks. Real graffiti artists, who carry spray cans and not stupid drawings and buckets of glue, would have handled the splasher problem a long time ago. We would have waited, set him up and beat his teeth out of his face for essentially crossing us out. Why don’t you capitalist art school failures team up and take care of the problem before mommies and daddies money runs out and you cannot make your bullshit art anymore.

I wish I could splash this blog.
I don't buy no cheap jew clothes.
same goes for that other crap comp, free kuntry.
don't buy crap clothes.
any post with a mike tyson clip is a keeper. brilliant, tien!
people, seriously. it says "try this" and suggests that the splasher go splash an AA ad.
CW got the point:

i promise.
an acquaintance of mine is one of the splashers -- he told me he was contacted a few weeks back by american apparel's marketing dept. about sponsorships... he said he didn't take it but i guess he changed his mind...
um, that is just obviously such a baiting lie. i mean, american apparel is lower than dogshit, don't get me wrong, but i don't think there's anyway this can be construed as an AA ad. why would aa suggest that their own ads should splashed? why would the splasher splash their own manifesto? anyway, people are so dumb.
why is AA lower than dogshit may I ask?
AA:
1) union busters
2) misogynist ads
3) creepy. am i wrong?
Isn't it more possible that AA is just stating their opinion about this manafesto by trashing it in their add and not hiding out like the splasher?
if the splasher is american apparel, why would they only post over the buffed pieces on north 6th and none of the other splasher hits around nyc?
also, whenever the splasher hits faile's own building on north 6th street, faile takes the liberty of removing it within a day. yet the so-called american apparel ad has stayed up on faile's OWN building for over a week.
hmmm. maybe someone should go ask failure what he thinks.
hmm.. see, after reading this, and thinking about the ad a bit
i suspect the person that made this particular flyer is saying
"dude, don't splash art, splash these shitty american apparel ads"
