In the past we've told you about New York album art from The Doors, Bob Dylan, The Ramones and more. You can read the past posts here, and now we move on to The Allman Brothers Band: Live at Fillmore East.
The album was recorded at a show in 1971, the year the venue shut its doors. With the cover art shot by Jim Marshall, it looks like the photo shoot took place in the back alley of the Fillmore (there are even guided tours in New York which visit the spot). While many have suspected that, and that The Allman Brothers Band are the only band to have a photo of the venue on the cover of an album (which would be fitting since the Allmans played so many shows there they were often referred to as "Bill Graham's House Band"), it's not true. In actuality, the album cover shots were taken at the bands headquarters in Macon, Georgia. Marshall explains here.
About the venue: Bill Graham opened it as a counterpart to the Fillmore West in 1968, a venue known also as "The Church of Rock and Roll". The New York establishment was in the East Village at 105 2nd Avenue (map).
Currently the former entrance lobby is a branch of Emigrant Savings Bank, which includes photos of the venue. The rest of the space is an apartment complex. There's a tribute on the street pole at the corner still, mosaics make up logos of bands and music notes. Here's an old torn photo of what the scene looked liked outside of the venue before the last shows.

That shot was not taken at the Fillmore East. In Jim Marshall's own words:
"This shot of the Allman Brothers Band was taken in Macon, Georgia, in 1969 for the cover of At Fillmore East. From the left, Jai Johanny Johanson, Duane, Gregg, Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley, and Butch Trucks. Now, the interesting part of this story is that I hear there are guided tours of the Lower East Side in New York City that supposedly visit the spot where this shot was taken. None of the pictures on the At Fillmore East album or CD packages were taken at the Fillmore East. Right before we did the shot in Macon, I stenciled "The Allman Brotheres Band at Fillmore East" on one of the cases. For the album concept, I received a platinum record from the Allman Brothers' current manager."
which is why i wrote in the post:
"In actuality, the album cover shots were taken at the bands headquarters in Macon, Georgia. Marshall explains here." (and then i linked to the same exact thing you cut and pasted.)
my bad
I've read that the band is laughing because Duane had just scored a bag of coke and is holding it there in his hands.
Kevin Bacon said in an interview that a relative of his (brother? uncle? cousin?) worked at the Fillmore East. His Six Degrees cannot be fought, people. Surrender to the Bacon!
This one of the two all time best live albums, and they were both recorded at the Fillmore East!

band of gypsies
This is hysterical... for years the thing to do was find the spot where this photo was taken and take a picture there. When they were going to knock down the building the buzz was to go down there and get one of the bricks that was from the picture... or sell one of the bricks and say it was from the picture.
Now I find out I spent five bucks for nothing.
(kidding)
Great story, though... thanks.
Performance Rockin' The Fillmore -Humble Pie also recorded at the Fillmore East is the greatest live album of all time.
