When I was a freshman in college I made about 10 gallons of wine under my bed and got half my floor drunk on the stuff.

It was quite easy - get a few glass jugs, some airlocks, some yeast and sanitize everything with plenty of Clorox. Screw the fancy-pants grapes - just get some grape juice that doesn't have preservatives (Welch's was my brand), dump some sugar in (use a hy(g/d)rometer to figure out the right amount), cork it up, leave it alone a few months, and voila - wine fit for a bunch of underaged college freshman.

I also made a gallon of yogurt in a cooler, but I didn't have too many takers for that (get some milk, heat it to the temperature of milk fresh from the teat or thereabouts, drop a dollop of live yogurt in there, and you'll soon have enough yogurt to open your own Pinkberry stand).

This is fabulous. I love this line: "You don’t have to boil a pig’s head to have a good time, oh no.

to #4: having grown "herbs" indoors myself, I can tell you from experience that the aero garden is insufficient and would produce inferior product, if anything at all. For the entry level $150 cost of this contraption, you'd be better off sticking with your delivery service of choice.

"it may also come as no surprise that food purveyors like to have as much control their raw materials as much as possible."

I like the idea of the Aero Garden, but I've been using the free one for years. it’s called the Fire Escape

Despite being a fervent bee enthusiast, I must point out that keeping bees in NYC is illegal. That said, I know of several rooftop beekeepers in Brooklyn in Ft. Greene and Cobble Hill.
