Sammy's Bowery Follies opened in 1934 (changed from a 'restaurant' when prohibition ended) and closed in 1970 (a year after Sammy died). It was still thriving through the 1950s and survived in the 1960s as a Grey Line tour bus stop. Mostly, it survived with the efforts of my grandparents Sammy and Bessie Fuchs. Great article.

To be fair, the lighting district now only consists of Bowery bet. Grand and Broome. The restaurant district is mostly concentrated on the corner of Bowery and Kenmare, with the occasional shop scattered along Bowery bet. Grand and Elizabeth.

The lighting district still exists. So does the restaurant supply district.
