One Mets Player to be Wax-ified

2007_02_mmetussauds.jpg

2007_02_wrightjersey.jpgMets fans, your wait is finally over. No, not because it's Spring Training, and not because of a World Championship, but because one member of the New York Mets will finally be enshrined in...Madame Tussauds. The 204-figure museum, which bills itself as "New York's most famous tourist attraction" (get it? famous), will unveil its first wax Mets figure on April 2. The house of wax already has five Yankees figures - Derek Jeter, Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle (under repair), and George Steinbrenner.

There's no word on which Met the museum will choose, but The Times did get some clues from Tussauds' director of sales and marketing. The figure will be a current player and won't be bald. Our bet is with David Wright, though it would be fun to see the given to Pedro Martinez. The figure is currently being made in London at a cost of $150,000.

And as to question of why there were no Mets already there? There was no clear favorite among proposed players. Um, hello, the Mets did have a future Hall of Fame catcher playing here not so long ago.

Oh, one more: "What he objected to was Art Howe telling the media that he'd be moved before he actually told Piazza."

In your own words, What a wuss!

Craig: 1) He played coy with the reporters for weeks about "making an announcement". I think it's a sad commentary on our society and about most sports fans that he had to lie about his sexual orientation. His longtime partner must have felt devastated.

    2) As Don Zimmer said:"Thousands of guys have been hit with a baseball, but only one guy ever held a press conference about it". Clemens even called him after the game and the reporters in the locker room stated that Piazza refused to take the call.

    3) 2004? Too little, too late. At least a year too late.

Piazza never lived up to his potential, never was a team player, and never thought that there was

anyone else in the world but Mike Piazza.

I do have a clue: I root for the Yankees.

"Yeah, but how to depict Mike Piazza? Holding the press conference to announce that he's heterosexual? Holding the press conference to complain about Clemon's pitch beaning him? Telling his GM that he refuses to move to the position where the team really needed him, just so he could pursue his personal record for most runs by a catcher?"

    Are you serious???

    1) He didn't "hold a press conference" to say he was heterosexual. It was on the field during BP and he answered a direct question about the false rumors that were being spread.

    2) Re: Clemens, he simply went to the post-game PC and gave his two cents. And yeah, it's real outrageous to be upset about someone intentionally hitting you in the head with a baseball traveling 96 MPH. What a wuss.

    3) Maybe you missed it, but he played more games in 2004 as a 1B than a C. What he objected to was Art Howe telling the media that he'd be moved before he actually told Piazza.

Please, please, PLEASE get a clue before you post something.

I hope it's not Carlos Delgado. All I heard last postseason was how well Carlos Delgado played in the 4th spot last year. WHAT A JOKE! If anyone would have been in Delgado's spot last year, the Mets may have won 130 games.

My fantasy team was filled with Carlos Delgados last year -- bad-ass players who didn't do anything --and we finished in LAST place. Conversely, the Mets TEAM was good enough to overcome.

**Sorry, just still pissed off at Carlos from last summer!

My vote is for Mookie Wilson.

It should be Tom Seaver but the article states "The figure will be a current player and won't be bald"

    Also, Ed Kranepool.

I love that Madame Tussaud's banner, Tien.

  • but those are all old players! and by old, i mean former.

it is strange that this would be the first and only met though.

Uh hello, Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman--members of the 69 World Series winning Miracle Mets. Plus Seaver is a 300 game winner and a Hall of Famer. The people doing the selecting must either be very ignorant of Met and baseball history or very young.

Wright is a good player at this time, but its a little early in his career to enshrine him like a memorial.

  • Joe

    Marv Throneberry!

  • David Jacobs

It's surprising that Casey Stengel isn't in there.

  • Dave H.

    Keith Hernandez!
