NYU College Republicans say they are happy with the reaction from their planned "Illegal Immigrant Hunt" at Washington Square Park. They wanted to start a controversy and discussion - and that they did, with hundreds of protesters and more members of the media than actual College Republicans playing the game (by one count, twelve showed up, one signed up). College Republicans president Sarah Chambers told the Washington Square News, "Sometimes, you have to be politically incorrect. Sometimes, you have to be provocative." However, NYU president John Sexton told the NY Times he was disappointed that the group put "sloganeering and trivialization of thought above true debate."
The Washington Square News also have information about the actual game. Apparently a student, David Landsburg, claimed he found the illegal immigrant, but then a protester ripped up Landsburg's certificate. But it turned out that Landsburg "forged the certificate and did not actually win" - the real winner was a College Republican member who spotted club secretary Caitlin Kannall wearing the tag. Kannall said, "People didn't think much of me because so many other protesters at the event were wearing the 'Hello, I'm an illegal immigrant' signs."
What else? Chambers was named the Worst Person in the World last night by Keith Olbermann, which probably makes her a shoo-in for an internship at a conservative think tank. Students from Columbia, which is no stranger to controversy over immigration issues, also protested the event. And the Daily News' Juan Gonzalez has a column about the protest, noting that College Republicans club member Wesley Chan made a big deal about how his parents immigrated "by waiting in line" but then wasn't as prepared when reporters asked about the Chinese Exclusion Act.

NYUINC.ORG REPRESENT !
my mom will be so proud of me.
thats annie rudnick from students creating radical change and nyuinc.org
it is actually Zaq landsberg, member of the Giant Legs team at last year's Idiotarod, creator of the Mother Giving Birth circus pose previously featured on Gothamist, and overall performer/artist extraordinaire
Jen: you have a stiffy for campus protests. We get it already. Can we move on now? Campus protests are to be expected no matter what is going on in the universe. Most of these kids will be yuppies ten years out of college just like the last batch. It's BORING.
You know, these College Republicans all say they're not racist and that they're just upset because illegal immigrants are breaking the law.
But you know, the people who hire these illegal immigrants and pay them slave wages are also breaking the law--the minimum wage law. And the people who pay them illegal wages are the ones really distorting the job market.
Yet we never see the College Republicans organize a Sweatshop Owner Hunt.
I think it says a lot about your priorities when you condemn poor people for breaking the law to work hard & fed their families, but you don't have nearly the same venom for the unscrupulous bosses who are breaking the law in order to viciously exploit people.
On the other hand, it's probably unfair to assume racism is why they persecute the immigrants and excuse the sweatshop owners. I mean, it could just as easily be elitism.
my homies and me up here in the heights are starting a game today called sarah chambers hunt. first nigga to bag her this weekend gets first crack. after that, we have another 34 who want as crack... holla sarah !
Yeah, is Sarah Chambers hot? That's what I want to know.
I only conclude the following three things:
1) The Hunt is tasteless but protected.
2) The protest and the media blitz gives Chambers the publicity she wanted. I won't be surprise to see her on the talk show circuit ala Coulter
3) Chambers is hot!
Wesley Chan is the most ignorant kind of tool -- good on Juan Gonzalez for putting the little kowtower in his place. This stunt proves how smart most conservatives are not about most issues.
There's nothing illegal about immigration.
Good for you to add that Wesley Chan insert.
What an ass. I should make him real Mao Tse dong's Little red book and then shove it up has ignorant ass.
Tongue in cheek racism is awesome! That Sarah Chambers looks pretty hot from far away although no closeups so she might be a butterface. Someone's gonna get some sugar in her gastank from an illegal immigrant and her name rhymes with larah thambers.
yo anonymous, focusing on the economics of this you need to stop making blanket statements that imply illegals are employed like sweatshop workers here in the US. plenty of illegal immigrants working undercover get paid more than minimum wage- it really depends on the job. i'm sure some places pay them $3 to clean the dishes or whatever but lots of illegals who paint houses, mow lawns, work as maids, etc. get paid $8 to $15 an hour. that's real talk...
is wesley chan the son of michelle malkin?
what a waste of oxygen
#5 - If the College Republicans had a Sweatshop Hunt in NYC they would be hunting Chinese immigrants on Canal Street. I suppose there wouldn't be a protest of that. Nice backhanded way of trying to say all evil business owners must be Republicans. So shut up and go listen to your iPod. I guess because Apple slaps a "Designed in California" label on it the left can make Steve Jobs Man of the Year. Who cares what the conditions of the factory in China is!
there's very few "sweatshops" left in NYC's Chinatown. It's getting too hard to compete with overseas manufacturers. You're getting stuff made in places you've wouldn't of heard of 10 years ago. All going through middlemen to get around trade laws. You know, slap on a fake "made in" label.
If you find a "Sweatshop" on Canal street, please do tell.
You're hearing old news.
People should go back and read the post on NYC taxes and where that money is going. Those of us who actually make a living have reason to oppose illegal immigration, except for left-wing hacks like Schumer and Olbermann who are just looking to expand their political power base.
this stupid generalization ("illegal hunt"), make it appear that all immigrants who are here illegally have snuck accross our borders and are trying to scam the process.
hundreds of thousands of immigrants who have come here for a better way of living have become illegal or out of status becaus the united states citizen and immigration service (under homeland secirity / formerly INS) is so completely inefficient and incompentent they are unable to process applicants within the appropriate time frame or the uscis processor botches the application all together.
thus, well meaning and those who play by the rules become illegal. we should be protesting how uscis and dhs are so amazingly wasteful and unable to handle their affairs.
Anonymous: I see both Dems and GOPpers suggesting more workplace enforcement, but I tend to doubt that the former really mean it.
For instance, after the 2003 WalMartRaid, NancyPelosi - speaking in Mexico - accused her own government of conducting "TerrorizingRaids".
And, after the recent Operation ReturnToSender - designed to pick up fugitive and criminal IllegalAliens, many of whom were already in jail - 'Frisco's mayor called for an end to raids, and one city even passed a SanctuaryPolicy. That city has a Green mayor, so I'll just put that under the general "liberal useful idiot for the government of Mexico" banner.
I have a better game. Look at the photos of the protest and we'll play "Find the Keffiyeh." Why is it that people protesting racism wear the emblem of the movement devoted to blowing up civilians?
People should go back and read the post on NYC taxes and where that money is going.
Speaking of tax dollars, why is it that Republicans never get their frilly panties in a bunch over corporate welfare?
I'm glad I never acted like Sarah Chambers in college. My parents would have been deeply ashamed, and my previous immigrant generations would have rolled over in their graves.
Neither side wants this issue fixed, so protesting about it is a waste of time.
Glad this was covered; I couldn't make it yesterday but I am glad the turnout was good!
Hey D: Why do you think grubby left wingers have started wearing keffiyehs? Everyone knows they are associated with the PLO and anyone who wears one in NYC is doing it out of solidarity with a terrorist organization. Don't accuse someone of bigotry without understanding the facts.
#20
It is an accessory made famous and stylish by a terrorist. When worn by "progressives" and "activists" it is intended to show solidarity with "Palestine," whose national goal is the murder of Jewish civilians and the destruction of the state of Israel. It's not a generalization when the traditional article of clothing is worn as a specific symbol.
Oh yeah, Nola? "Anyone who wears [a keffiyeh] in NYC is doing it out of solidarity with a terrorist organization", huh?
That is such utter bullshit. I happen to have several friends from the Middle East, and they wear keffiyehs for several reasons--cultural pride, for one--none of which is to support terrorists. I'm sure they would love to sit down and discuss this point with you, but you and "eyeroll" have obviously already made up your mind.
And I don't want anybody who begins a statement with "Everyone knows..." to tell me about "facts." And would I take anyone seriously who refers to "grubby left wingers"?
hs: My statement had nothing to do with Republicans or corporate welfare, and Chambers's ancestors probably immigrated here legally. So what are you talking about?
The generalizations on both sides are incredibly lame, can we all just agree that S. Chambers is a hottie?
hs says: Speaking of tax dollars, why is it that Republicans never get their frilly panties in a bunch over corporate welfare?
I would suggest more research. IllegalImmigration is corporate welfare: their employers get lower-wage and/or more compliant workforce, and pass the social costs (schooling, incarceration, etc.) off on the rest of us.
Fun fact: the federal response to the KatrinaDisaster was to allow companies to bring in IllegalAliens to do the cleanup. Those companies got fat contracts and then paid a low wage to IllegalAliens to live in squalor and work in unsafe conditions. And: the Democrats aided and abetted Bush with that plan.
Well, Keith also let the media and the protesters who attended share Chambers' award.
Olbermann was on Conan last night. He's also a Cornell grad and I think mentioned he was in the same class as Tim Minton.
Oh, he's as tall as that irish freak conan, he's pretty pretty tall. conan didn't like him badmouthing fellow mick bill orelley.
D, Whenever someone leads with "Everyone knows", the opposite tends to be true.
Back on topic: The idea of a "Hunt" by itself is offensive. People aren't Animals and this "Hunt" tells people that the College Republicans think "Illegal Immigrants" are at the level of animals. Illegal Immigration is a serious issue and people like Wesley Chan only demonstrate that they aren't prepared to tackle it.
I particularly like this gem:
I wonder if Wesley Chan has figured out that he's likely the Token Minority in the NYU College Republicans??God, I fucking hate college students.
you can hunt animals, fungi, minerals, treasures, cool... pretty much anything a person may wish to find.
i think #33 speaks for most of this city.
love&rage annie, love&rage.
There are about 10 million illegal immigrants in the U.S, and they are already a part of this society. The most important thing is that we, American, hire them. This is why people are willing to take risk in order to come to U.S. Furthermore, economical contribution of these illegal immigrants made to America is huge. They do the hardest work with minimum wage or less than minimum wage in this country. They are breaking the law, but would you want to have jobs like washing dish with minimum wage?
