On the Plate: Upcoming Food and Wine Events

2007_02_food_oscar_statuette.jpgFebruary 25: Oscar Night at Bottlerocket
Since the real nominees are unavailable, Bottlerocket has chosen wines to represent the actors in their absence. A sampling of stand-ins:

- Peter O'Toole - Bordeaux - Tour Simard 1999 - A classic Claret with a little bit of bottle age. But holding up very well thank you very much.
- Forest Whitaker - Earthquake Petite Sirah - An actor so powerful, so compelling, so strong. Oh yeah. You know what we're talking about.
- Penelope Cruz - Cellar Can Blau - Sexy, Spanish with lots of shiny diamonds on the dress. Soft, velvety and beautiful underneath.
3 - 6 p.m.; free tastings. 5 West 19th Street; 212-929-2323.

February 25: Winter Barbecue
Cure the mid-winter blahs with a barbecue at Flatbush Farm, featuring beer-braised bratwurst, wild boar sausages, grilled venison skewers and oysters, along with beer from Six Point Brewery. 2:00 - 7:00 p.m., 76 Saint Marks Avenue. 718-622-3276.

February 26: Kosher Food & Wine Experience
The Museum of Jewish Heritage hosts the first-ever Kosher Food & Wine Experience, sponsored by Royal Wines. Kosher vintners from across the world will be represented, including chateaus Valendraud, Leoville Poyferré, Giscours, Pontet Canet, Yon Figeac, Giraud, and Laurent Perrier; Capçanes Flor de Primavera (Spain); Domaine du Castel and Barkan (Israel); and Herzog and Covenant (California). Nosh on kosher delicacies prepared by television chef and restaurateur Jeff Nathan, of Abigail’s Restaurant. 6:30 pm, $75 per person ($100 per couple). Call 1-888-671-4845 for tickets.

Someone at Bottlerocket, or the store's public relations people, have clearly gotten to Gothamist. Eight separate plugs by Gothamist and the store's only been open, what, eight months now? You give more play to this store than many other worthy wine stores. For the record, '99 Simard is a recommendation that would only reward a retail shop with excess '99 Simard in inventory. (Later releases like the '99 Simard that compete with currently available vintages like 2003 are not necessarilly better vintages just because they have an earlier year on the label.)

Dear Pknut,

We have been doing a lot of interesting, free events at Bottlerocket which is, I believe, why Gothamist has been happy to list them.

Your comment about our 1999 Chateau Tour Simard is both unkind and utterly inaccurate. The 1999 is a current vintage available now from the distributor, not something we've been sitting on (as you noted yourself, we have not been open a year yet.) Traditionally, Bordeaux wines benefit tremendously from age. 2003 was a freak year, because of the terrible heat wave that enveloped France. The grapes were incredibly ripe at harvest and the resulting wines are full of ripe fruit and very approachable now. Of course, many wines are crafted for immediate consumption, but many good wines from Bordeaux lose their rough edges and gain complexity with a little bit of age. Therefore we are very happy to be able to offer that experience to our customers.

People are already so confused about wine, you do a disservice to the public adding to the misinformation floating around. And from your post, it sounds like you have had a bad experience with Bottlerocket. If I can address it personally, I would love the opportunity. I am in the store most days and would be happy to talk. We pride ourselves on giving people a great wine buying experience and I would be grateful for your feedback.

Tom from Bottlerocket
