<description>&lt;p&gt;&gt;&gt;Newsday says that in 1894, Nassau did have that opportunity but turned it down.

In 1898 the three easternmost Queens towns, Hempstead, N. Hempstead and Oyster Bay, voted to form their own county, Nassau. This was partly due to Queens being incorporated into NYC but it was a complicated issue.
