For all of the talk about these towers being targets and uninsurable, suppose they are never built. Then the target simply shifts to some other building or some other method of killing people. We are simply never going to be safe until we leave the Middle East and we stop supporting Israel. It's that simple. But nobody dares suggest we stop supporting Israel. And don't think that any of the people running for President will completely pull the US out of the Gulf, even if we completely leave Iraq.

Ouroussoff's sweeping statement - "In a society where the social contract that binds us together is fraying..." - is enough to make me stop listening to him. No doubt in addition to being a pompous architectural critic, he is an authority on sociology & political science…

1. Dear #5, Hates Bunkers: I think they changed the design so that the concrete rock base is no longer necessary - thank god. 2. The Phare Tower is the ugliest skyscraper ever. 3. The Freedom Tower is a rather dull design, but by no stretch of the imagination is it "postmodernist historicism." Unless postmodernist historicism now means "nowhere near as ridiculously ugly as the Phare Tower."

Do we really want a skyscraper that is made of giant concrete walls without windows for the first 20 stories? I think we'll regret building it like this.

Downtown rents are going up - so much that some of the planned conversions to residential are now on hold. 75 and 95 Wall Street are reportedly back on the market as office space. It's too bad Goldman Sachs is building their own tower across the street and couldn't have been persuaded to take one of the other WTC site buildings.

the original world trade centers were hated by everyone. no one though they'd ever get any companies inside... now they're looked at as symbols etc... just build the friggin' thing... it's fine.

And, in a recent NY Times op-ed, Guy Nordenson, a structural engineer and architecture professor at Princeton who helped design the first version of the Freedom Tower, questions whether the building makes financial sense. Having a girlfriend makes little financial sense, yet many of us dive into that arrangement headfirst.

Ouroussoff has no basis for his criticism for the Freedom Tower. And how about his timing? Could he have jumped on the tower's bandwagon a while back and actually had a chance?! Who gives a 5hit what these critics think. They're just miffed that their designs don't get chosen and their visions aren't considered.
