Bus Driver Arrested For Attempted Rape

2007_02_ambulette.jpgA bus driver, who has an ID to drive a Department of Education school bus, kidnapped a 17-year-old girl and tried to rape her. Nicholas Vegier, 25, had been driving an ambulette van when he grabbed the girl from the steps of Evander Childs High School in the Bronx yesterday morning.

A passer-by heard the girl's screams and told the police, who found Vegier trying to take off the victim's clothing. Vegier tried to escape, but the police caught him and charged him with attempted rape, unlawful imprisonment and resisting arrest.

Vegier is employed by an ambulette company and a bus service. His ID from the DOE's Office of Pupil Education authorizes him to drive a school bus, but the Daily News reports that DOE did not return calls inquiring about Vegier's status. The bus and ambulette companies did not comment.
