Salud, Mr. President

george.jpgLet us be the first to wish you a happy President’s Day, assuming your loved ones or roommates haven’t beaten us to it. Just on the heels of Valentine’s Day, this holiday comes as a welcomed treat with no responsibilities of gift buying, cooking or convincing yourself that you’re “just picky”. Not to mention a day off to catch up on important tasks like beating your high score at Wii Bowling (current record: 152) or watching those NetFlix that have been patiently waiting for you, collecting dust on your TV stand. But it’s easy to get caught up in “you” and forget the meaning behind the holiday. President’s Day is an opportunity to recognize some of the great and crappy Presidents that have helped to build our nation. Being leader of the free world is really hard work - requiring frequent vacations and trips to the ranch. Sometimes you need to take a night off from building an empire and have a nice, stiff drink. So that’s how we are going to celebrate today - take it easy, turn off the Treo and drink what the big boys do.

President’s favorite drinks:

George Washington: Madeira wine

Gerald Ford: Gin and tonic
2 oz gin
5 oz tonic water
1 lime wedge

Harry Truman: Bourbon

Richard Nixon: Rum and coke
4 oz Bacardi white rum
8 oz Coca-Cola

Lyndon Johnson: Scotch and soda

Herbert Hoover: Martini
6 ounces of very cold gin.
5 drops of dry vermouth.
2 small twists of lemon rind.
2 Picholine olives

Franklin Roosevelt: Scotch or brandy

Thomas Jefferson: Wine (Montrachet)

What better way to commemorate this holiday than with the drinks that were there for our Presidents, through the good times and the bad? Today, we raise our Scotch to you, FDR. To you.

Gothamist would be remiss if it didn't include the presidents who drove YOU to drink. (Like, for example, the current administration.)

JFK ... Vodka southside.
Truman .. bourbon and branch.
The Nixon drink can only be served by a Filipino butler named Manolo. (See Hunter Thompson for significance). Then ... wander through the halls of the White House cursing at portraits of Presidents.
For LBJ .. think it was Cutty Sark ....
Carter was a teetotaler. Tea may have been too strong.
Clinton ... what does go with pizza, an intern's blue dress and the Oval Office? Pepsi, I think.
Bush I was a martooney. Dry.
Bush II was good around the keg until he found national politics.

GW also brewed a kick-ass porter at Mount Vernon.
