Brooklyn Drinks: The Hope Lounge

P1010003.JPGThe aptly titled and recently openedHope Lounge (it's on Hope Street), might might seem a little too tranquil at first. The enormous red walls are sporadically graced with signs and Indian statues, but if there is a theme, it’s not readily apparent. Right now, it is huge, clean, and spare, which accentuates the high ceilings and abundant seating. With so much space they have enough room to house a regular schedule of live acts, most starting around 9 or 10, in the usual jazz-bluegrass-D.J. vein. You know, something for everyone.

P1010004.JPGThe long list of musical acts may tempt you to frequent the hopping night scene, but for the thrifty we’d highly suggest the long happy hour. From 3 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, all drinks are $2 off, which makes thinking of what deal you want especially fun. Sure you could discount that Corona, but aim high and you’ll be rewarded. Specifically, order a glass of Chimay, the populist Trappist beer. It would normally run you $8, which is a find by most Manhattan standards. We’ve seen some places charge more than $12. But during happy hour it is only $6, and they have both the Chimay Rouge and Bleue. The latter of which is about 9% alcohol, twice that of normal beer. So be careful. While you’re lounging on one of the red couches in the huge space thinking about all that money you’re saving, keep tabs on the number of bottles you’re plowing through. Our one left us quickly buzzed, and two will probably get you ready for the evening entertainment. After that, we here at Gothamist release responsibility and just kindly suggest you get some food in your stomach. They have a full menu.

I went to Hope Lounge for happy hour last week and was surprised to find out that Budweiser bottles were only $2. Though I enjoyed the cheap buds, some of my friends also took advantage of a $2 reduction in all drinks. After happy hour ended, we all enjoyed some live music and some smokes out on a huge outdoor patio. I definitely plan to return to this beautiful new place with other friends.

This is my new favorite spot in Williamsburg. I went to a big party there last weekend and I had a blast. I loved the outdoor patio and the drinks specials were great. The decor inside was upscale and the bartenders were really friendly. I'll be back soon!

Hope Lounge is totally cool -- with a great vibe that I've enjoyed many times. I went last Saturday afternoon and they had a painting party that was neat, with a group of people painting a collage on a really big outdoor patio wall. On several prior occasions I've gone and heard some great live acoustic music, and I once heard a really good DJ. The sound system was fabulous so I don't know why someone would write and say it was bad one night. It must have been an isolated technical problem. I've also enjoyed their barbeque many times. It's simple but high quality food at a very low cost.
