Rudy Giuliani Is Running

2007_02_rudylarry.jpgTaking a break from Anna Nicole Smith coverage, Larry King interviewed former mayor Rudy Giuliani who finally admitted that he's running for president. In fact, King asked Giuliani three times if he's running (we don't know if that's because King's so old, he's hard of hearing and forgets). During the interview, Giuliani actually criticized the Bush administration, and gave what his strategy would have been to go into Iraq. From the NY Times:

His comments more closely aligned him with his chief rival in Republican primary polls, Senator John McCain of Arizona, who has supported the war, as Mr. Giuliani does, but has criticized its conduct.

“I would remove Saddam Hussein again,” Mr. Giuliani said. “I just hope we’d do it better and we’d do it in a different way.”

Most important, he added, the United States, which has had 120,000 to 160,000 troops at a time in Iraq, should have gone in with “maybe 100,000 to 130,000 more.”

In addition, “I would have us not disband” the Iraqi military or purge the government of Baath Party members, because “that meant getting rid of the entire civil service,” he said, adding: “The country had no infrastructure.”

“There was a real doubt as to whether we could do this nation building,” he said, and as it has turned out, “we’re not going to do it.”

Giuliani also said on the program that he's pro-choice, but "I'm also, as you know -- always have been -- against abortion, hate abortion, don't like it, wouldn't personally advise anyone to have an abortion and -- but I believe a woman has a right to choose. And you can't have criminal penalties and I think that would be wrong."

Here's the transcript of Larry King Live, where Giuliaini also discusses Iran and then pundits discuss the 2008 race. Newsday nows says "the only suspense now is about the where and when of a full-fledged announcement." Eh, now that Rudy's finally spit it out, we don't think it's that big a deal anymore.

On the other side, the Post says that a prominent South Carolina black leader endorsed Senator Hillary Clinton "just days" after his consulting firm received $200,000 from her campaign.

I can imagine a quiet get-together of “family values” republicans, having a few drinks, smoking their smuggled-in Havanas. Bob Dole says: “I had my aides bring my first wife to court in the middle of the night, in front of a judge who was a friend and Bang! Divorce granted. She never even knew I had filed!” Newt Gingrich says: “That’s nothing! I told my wife I wanted a divorce just as she was coming out from under anesthesia, after cancer surgery… just when she needed me more than ever!” Rudy says: “I married my first cousin and then had the marriage annulled to “marry up” to a blonde actress… and then had my lawyer slander her on television… on Mother’s Day… with my kids watching! Then I went to court to try getting her kicked out of our home so that my girlfriend could move in!” “Rudy”, they all cried out, “You are THE MAN!!! Family values! Family values! Family values!”

I wonder what his popularity will be with New Yorkers, or citizens of the civilised world in general. While generally, I like Guiliani and what he has done for New York, if he gets in bed with the Washington Republicans (which he will have to do to get the nomination), it's game over for him. I think he'd do much better as an Independant or maybe even a Democrat. There are a lot of Red State voters who don't take kindly to City Folk.

Huh. Not much to say... He barely mentioned the eleventh and blasted Bush.

I wonder if St. Rudy read Howard Fineman's column yesterday where he quoted James Dobson, Jerry Falwell, and Pat Robertson as pretty much all saying they could never vote for Guiliani (and who'd think we had something in common with that unholy trio) and decided, screw it, I'll try a different tack...

Or maybe he's just been reading Gothamist posts.

I'm interested in hearing Giuliani's plan to remove Hussein again. Really, hasn't the man suffered enough?

Does he also plan to kill his kids again?

yeah like anybody who has a right to choose would ever say "I love abortions. I'm for it!"

It is good to read that Giuliani has some non-traditional republican ideas. It is also good to read that he is not pandering to the "left". However I would be more interested in him if I knew his stance on Border Security, illegal imigration and corporate hiring of illegal immigrants.
