Patrons Killed At Your Joint? You're Closed!

2007_02_bar.jpgThe City Council's Public Safety Committee is discussing a number of new proposals to crack down on nightlife problems. The NY Sun reports that one of them would allow the city to shut down businesses like shops and bar "if more than one person is killed within a year." Another would allow the city to shut down fake ID businesses - including their legal fronts.

Assistant Police Commissioner Robert Messner says that public nuisance laws need to be strengthened so authorities can close down troublesome clubs. Apparently there are loopholes that could (though the loophole never has) prevent closings when there no violent felonies.

The NY Nightlife Association says that the public nuisance law is "being abused." Spokesman Robert Bookman tells the Sun, "We think the use of violations rather than convictions is a major problem. You've got to deal with convictions." In other words, arrests that do not lead to convictions would lead to a bar's closing.

Wonder how far this would cover? That is, will it cover the sidewalk too?

Does the city really have nothing better to do? Where is that affordable housing everyone talks about?

What's up with the City Council lately? This is a waste of legislation. Murder is already illegal. Grand theft auto is already illegal. Drug possession is already illegal. Instead of cracking down on night clubs, they should crack down on the things they should already be cracking down on in the first place: real crime.

Hell, dancing is illegal. Why are the Council writing up even more restrictions?

yeah the city has nothing to do better than to crack down on fake id's, illegal drugs, and murder... i think they have their plate filled with other stuff like planting bulbs on park avenue and union square for the spring... f*ckin tool.

what makes this city a great place to live is that the city is able to to do so much at once. cracking down on clubs is a fraction of issues the city is already dealing with. but hey, nobidy ever thinks that way, especially here.

affordable housing? ever hear of brooklyn, queens, staten island, and the bronx? or how about manhattan on 101 and 1st ave? on lenox ave? or parts of the lower east side? perhaps battery park city (still lower than the rest of city after 9/11)...

Great! A wonderful reason for bars and clubs to cover up crimes that happen in their establishments and/or not report them! How lovely!

Ed, see post 3. Those things are all already illegal. And the owners are truly negligent they will probably be sued into closing. If they are merely unlucky that some bad eggs cause problems it hardly seems fair to shut them down.

Well there goes my bright idea of re-opening McGurk's Suicide Hall. Municipal tight asses.
