One time I tried living with a hipster in Williamsburg. Total mistake! The apartment was filled to the brim with trucker hats and empty cans of PBR. I couldn't walk anywhere without stepping on mesh or aluminimnumunm.

One of my coworkers found a roomie through Craigslist, but he had a little cocktail party for a handful of finalists so he and his other roommate could get to know them a bit before deciding -- and the ones they didn't pick got to at least swap info on apartment-hunting with each other.

I would imagine 'creative types' would look for what everyone is looking for in a roommate: dependable, works all the time, respectful and well adjusted. You know, like the parents that underwrite their lifestyles.

4 pads landed off of craigslist and zero problems... you people are fucking paranoid! some of the best friends I've made are roommates off of craigslist. I have only had WORSE results in the friend of a friend route. besides, who else pays $500 for a big room with a window in a loft share, 15ft ceilings, and the works in Soho... thank god for CraigsList!

Yeah, for what it's worth, I've openly offered my MySpace page, given that it would give the roommate-hunter more information about me than an email would give. It's actually helped, I think. Given people's schedules (like my own, which is crazy) -- CL is a decent, free way to at least check out some apartments. Yeah, there's websites like roommates.com, but those charge you, which seems ridiculous when there are free alternatives.

I was on the roommate search a few months ago and went the Craigslist route, but I asked that people send their myspace links if they replied so I could get a better gauge of their personality. I wasn't judging people based on their taste in music and camera-whoring pictures, but it definitely helped in filtering out the weirdos. If I'm going to live with a random stranger I found off the internet, I'd not only want them to pay rent on time, but I want to get along with them and not live in fear that they'd murder me in my sleep.

Oh Dude, I'm sure there are plenty of "whatever-you-are-sters" out there for you too. Or are you totally unique? I live alone (thankfully), but most of my roommate seeking friends just rely on Myspace. Laugh if you will, but it's basically the visual eqivalent of "friend of a friend." You don't have to worry about meeting potentially scary Craigslisters.

as someone who is currently looking for a roommate, neighborhood appeal isn't as big of a factor as is a roommate who is normal/sane/reasonable and can pay rent on time. i can deal w/ all types of areas - not all types of people.
