Seriously, the Cabaret Laws were a racist effort to keep black jazz from playing in downtown white clubs by licensing which venues could have a standing bass or a brass instrument or 3 or more people dancing.

Jim, you're a dick, while i wouldn't go out to that, what they're trying to do is an amazing thing for NYC, more entertainment can't possibly be a bad thing.

Also, does anyone know the original justification for the cabaret law?

I had a great time at this event, dancing with the lindy hop group in the afternoon.

Fighting the Cabaret Laws is an important local cause for people who support a vibrant arts scene in New York. The Cabaret laws are racist and anachronistic regulations that have stifled an important part of what has made New York a cultural mecca in the US and the world.
