Dance Dance For a Cabaret Revolution

Check out this video from Kelly Loudenberg, who says:

"Metropolis in Motion is holding a 24-hour Dance Marathon and Party to bring attention to the NY State Court appeal case regarding Cabaret Laws that restrict social dancing. Dance groups of various styles have been filling 90 minute timeslots since yesterday and through the night at 23rd Street and Fifth Avenue. There will be a party/rally on this morning following the Marathon from noon-2pm in Madison Square Park."

These people have waaaaay too much time on their hands.

What the hell happened to NYC?

I had a great time at this event, dancing with the lindy hop group in the afternoon.

Fighting the Cabaret Laws is an important local cause for people who support a vibrant arts scene in New York. The Cabaret laws are racist and anachronistic regulations that have stifled an important part of what has made New York a cultural mecca in the US and the world.

Jim, you're a dick, while i wouldn't go out to that, what they're trying to do is an amazing thing for NYC, more entertainment can't possibly be a bad thing.

Also, does anyone know the original justification for the cabaret law?

Seriously, the Cabaret Laws were a racist effort to keep black jazz from playing in downtown white clubs by licensing which venues could have a standing bass or a brass instrument or 3 or more people dancing.
