Then, I would like to submit that the ENTIRE YANKEES TEAM has been a "major disappointment" for seven seasons. Especially that 01 team. They were an out away. Man, they suck. But to be less facetious, that's just shallow. It's not A-Rod's fault that Randy Johnson sucked last year. It's not A-Rod's fault that the entire team blew up against Boston in 04 and that Joe Torre forgot how to manage his bench, baserunners and bullpen. It's not A-Rod's fault that Gary Sheffield and Bubba Crosby collided in 2005. To call him a major disappointment is simply to buy into the WFAN-driven ridiculousness that has created an atmosphere where the Yanks could lose one of the best players of all time because the fans are stupid and fickle.

ben - arod has great numbers, but in many eyes true greatness is measured by the number of rings you collect. see peyton manning. and famedoc - the linked article said that was a paparazzi that tossed the ball.

A lot of fair weather Yankees fans only care about the World Series Ring. Sure, ARod will probably go to the Hall of Fame, but he probably needs to leave NYC to regain respect. It's sad, but NYC is DJ's town.

Whew...the Times ran a brief piece on ARod's appearance at B&N yesterday. Sounds like a crazy fan tried to bean him with a ball. Also sounds like the security detail got a bit rough with the press.

We're not sure if the book deals with being booed by fans and being a major disappointment, but the description on Amazon makes it sound like the story of A-Rod's time with the Yankees: I didn't realize a "major disappointment" averaged just a shade under 40 HR and 119 RBI a season while hitting .299/.396/.549. Maybe the book should instead being about ignorant fans who have no perspective on their All Star players and can't appreciate future Hall of Famers.
