It's always great when surveys confirm what we know, because then it helps make us seem a little less crazy. amNew York reports on the NYC Transit Rider Council's bus survey that shows buses are typically 5 minutes and 15 behind their published schedules. The culprit is traffic and congestion that causes "bunching," which is when "one, two, or even three buses arrive at the same stop almost simultaneously." Another interesting finding: Some buses' signs say "Not in Service," "Subway Shuttle" and "Evacuation Center" even when they are running on their regular route!
Speaking of buses, Schools Chancellor Joel Klein said he wouldn't allow a 6 year old to take a city bus or subway to school. What's also funny is that some school buses are still dropping off kids a half hour after school starts, since the drivers have to drop off students at another school first!

Please, please cover the school bus route debacle. In the second week of the mayor's new plan, my daughter's school bus still arrives in the afternoon at her school more than an hour after dismissal. Why? Because the driver has to go to three other schools first.
I keep hearing the mayor on TV saying that the system is calming down and getting straightened out. Bull. All we get from 311 and the Board of Ed is obfuscation. I guess they think that if they hold out long enough parents will either get used to it or make other arrangements.
The DOE keeps saying the fact that the number of calls is decreasing is proof that things are starting to run smoothly.
Bullshit! I've called the OPT and to complain and was told "And why is that my problem?"
The 311 operator took my information and told me that if my child wasn't scheduled for a replacement bus then she couldn't look him up. Well if he were scheduled I wouldn't be calling in the first place.
First a screw up and then a cover up.
The reason these busses are so late is not just because of traffic but because it takes forever for people to pay when they get on the bus.
MTA should adopt a proof of payment system, so it doesn't take 5-10 seconds per person who gets on a bus. It will work wonders.

I don't understand what that means....is it 5 or 15? I'm actually interested to know.

Yeah because Gothamist hasn't already covered this issue to death. The general consensus is New Yorkers don't give a crap. Pick your kid up yourself if you're so concerned.
Chris,
I think New Yorkers do care about this. This is why the professional editors that run the newspapers and the TV stations are still covering it long after Bloomberg and Klein have had their little "Move along, there's nothing to see here folks" spiels.
How did you conclude what the general consensus is?
So I accidently got off a bus I didn't realize was going where I wanted to go. I got a transfer from a bus and like an idiot realized as the bus turned, that it was the bus I needed. Shoulda stayed on in the first place. So I ran across the street and attempted to "reboard" the bus. The driver says "Transfers don't work on the same line". I told him I accidently just got off the bus. He just looked at me and said I needed to pay a fare. I asked him if he was kidding? All he did was open the door. What a dick. I promptly gave him the finger and got off the bus...reminding him it was dicks like him who made the pblic not give a crap about their strike and gripes.
