Sharpton Threatens to Sue City Over Stop-and-Frisks

2007_02_bikearrest.jpgAs the City Council continues to look at police-supplied data showing blacks are stopped 55% of the time during stop-and-frisk searches, the community has startled to rumble. The Reverend Al Sharpton said that he would start collecting names to file a class action lawsuit against the city. He asid, "It's an outrage. It's enough. No matter how productive you are, to be cast as a suspect rather than a citizen is intolerable in this country... One will have to explain how 55% of the people stopped are black when we're not nearly 50% of the population."

The police explanation? NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said, "The data indicates no racial bias in the stops, but it does show a relationship between the percentage of individuals stopped and the descriptions of suspects" - 68% of the suspects described by victims in crimes are black.

The NY Times looked at the data and had some stats on the neighborhood level: In East New York's 75th Precinct, someone was frisked about every 24 minutes last year, while in the Battery Park/ Wall Street/ TriBeCa/ SoHo area of the First Precinct, a person was stopped every 16 hours.

In the 75th Precinct, which had 173,198 residents in the 2000 census, the police made 21,483 stops in 2006. When race or ethnicity was known, in 20,494 of the cases, 69 percent were black, 24 percent Hispanic, 3 percent white and 1 percent Asian/Pacific Islander. Seven percent of the stops resulted in an arrest or a summons.

In the First Precinct, which had only 40,451 residents but has many thousands of people coming in for work and shopping every day, the police made 554 stops. Of those, 39 percent were black, 28 percent white, 21 percent Hispanic and 10 percent Asian/Pacific Islander. Four percent were arrested or received a summons.

While Reverend Sharpton says he doesn't want impede the law, he still wants people to come forward if they feel they have been targeted. However, City Councilman Peter Vallone is concerned that Sharpton will "inflame" the community, noting that at least the data shows that the races of stop-and-frisks are correlated with those who were suspected.

"..blacks are stopped 55% of the time during stop-and-frisk searches,.."

We need to stop & frisk 'em even more. After all, they do commit 87% of all crimes.

Perhaps if Al and his cronies stepped to plate to condemn and end all black violence, maybe just maybe the frisking percentage would go down... actually not maybe, statistically, it would go down.

As it stands, Al Sharpton is a racist douche bag with one aganda: shameless self promotion.

Um don't dress like a thug and maybe you won't be pulled over?

that's true, last week I recall lot's of whites were on the pages of gothamist and the tv news.
I'm adding the drug related family in Suffolk who were shot in a home invasion.
so, that's the jersey city DUI cop, the family of 4 upstate in a fire then found to be a murder, the SI retired cop murder of his ex-wife and the stripper case.

are racial break downs of the stop and frisk arrests available? does anyone know how they correlate to the percentages of those stopped?

The hair police should file a lawsuit against the good Reverand for having bad hair. Really bad.

And his stylist, too.

Yeah.

Anything Al Sharpton touches he ignites!!!! This is no different, He's the equvilent Of a lawyer chasing an ambulance down the block !

the only thing i can think of is that he can't torch down his "national action network" headquarters to collect on $ anymore after doing it too many times before, so he's gotta do this.

hey al, what do you recommend as a solution? should we be looking for/stopping and frisking male/white/~50 years old if the description of a perp is male/black/~19 years old?

The merit of the lawsuit may be based on comparisons of the Detailed Physical Desciptons reported by those victims of crimes versus the Detailed Physical Characteristics of those who were stopped and frisked as a result of those reports.

If the correlation is not reasonably similar and a pattern could be established - then lack of reasonable suspiscion could be litigated - and even some of the summons issued could be questioned

Screw you "Get real" How the hell would you feel if the cops stopped you each and every time you stepped foot out your home on the way to Work, or wherever ? See people like you fail to put yourselves in the shoes of those affected . I don't have a record, and haven't commited any crimes so why is it that I should be stopped and frisked by some cop ? You all don't realize that most of these "Stop N Frisks" are racially biased . It has nothing to do with a possiblity of the person there stopping being involved in committing a crime . The cops have all this technology at there disposal (Databases, full of suspects with pictures, Updates of suspects)so there is no plusable reason for stopping people at random just because of the way they Dress, The Color of there skin, Or the way they carry themselves . I wonder what would happen if the cops started stopping and frisking all White people ! How would you all feel about being subjected to that sort of treatment ! You all would be filing lawsuit out your collective asses ! No excuses !

Old politics ! I wonder if the police were stopping and Frisking White people would it be accepted . I know the answer to this question, the sad fact is those codonning it are the ones viewing it happening . The next time you see a cop stopping someone to voilate there right just stop and think to yourself . That could be me, How would you feel ? Think about it .
