Fake WTC Coin Co.'s 9/11 Memorial Donation Denied

We were happy to read in the NY Post that the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation turned down a $30,000 donation from National Collector's Mint. The WTC Memorial Foundation said, "We weren't comfortable [with the donations] because of the history," proving that even though the foundation needs donors, no one wants money from horrible companies trying to profit from the tragedy.

NCM is the company behind those horrible ads offering coins made from silver "found under tons" of Ground Zero debris. The company has offered two different kinds of September 11 coins: One of Freedom Tower (which was fined by then Attorney General Spitzer for claiming to be pure silver) and more recently, a 2001-2006 Commemorative Coin, which has a WTC skyline that pops out. Yes, exactly.

And the Post says the cost to build Freedom Tower is now around $3 billion, because of $507 million in "non-construction" costs, like "integrity monitors to keep an eye on contractors."

Just yesterday, I saw a commercial for the dreadful "pop-up" coin on a television station in Philadelphia. It's a shame this company cannot be shut down. Do purchasers of these coins realize what suckers they are? What crooks the "mint" that offers them are? I guess not.

What makes these coins "fake"? Insensitive? Definitely. Tacky? Uh, yeah. Fake? I'm not so sure.

What makes them fake is that they aren't the real WTC.

i just saw this add on TV a few minutes ago ... they claim "buy the memorial coin before the last remaining traces of silver from the WTC site are recovered" or something to that effect. now THAT is a ridiculous claim. and reason why these people should be executed.

The coins are fake in that they are not legal tender, they shouldn't be able to label it a "coin" it's just a tacky small piece of metal, covered in a small bit of silver and gold.

They're as fake as all those people with the American Flag pins on their lapels.
It Pops up? that's pretty impressive, a 3D coin.

whenever i am totally confused by the way an article is written i look and its been penned by jen chung.

I had purchased more than 5 of these coins reason being that my Father James D. Cleere had been killed in the attacks of Sept. 11 2001.
