Roasted: Coffee Spots for Debauchees

Ugh.

Gothamist had a long night last night. There was liquor. There were dancing girls. There might have been someone named Thomas (call me!!). Today there’s a headache, light sensitivity and dry-mouth to alarm the most devoted stoner.

coffee_pot.jpgWe need coffee and, while we’re loyal to our favorite haunts, we’re in no mood for innocuous conversation with our (rather handsome, incidentally) barista. We want a deep, almost bottomless vat of big, bold, black coffee consumed in anonymity. We want dim lighting, covert corners and a soundtrack that doesn’t make us, or those around us, want to A. clap our hands or B. say yeah. No children, but rather likeminded lechers in recovery, each equally absorbed in their respective novels/laptops/ipods under their respective hoodies and behind their respective sunglasses. That’s what we’re after, folks.

Gorilla Coffee brews a mug strong enough to flush our system of any lingering toxins, along with our stomach lining, but the thumping music doesn’t bode well for our general malaise. We’re always fond of Tea Lounge but Saturday afternoons tend to attract the story-time set and we haven’t the patience for such nonsense today.

Naidre’s in Cobble Hill comes to mind (the Park Slope location is deeply cherished but far too small for our purposes). So does Grey Dog on Carmine Street in Manhattan. But we’re nursing the seeds of a migraine here, so we’re calling on you. Where to, readers?

    Grey Dog.

I miss this place terribly since leaving NY, so every chance I get I recommend it to others. That way I can live vicariously through them. I've lived in Chicago for 2+ years now, and I still haven't found somewhere that can give Grey Dog a run for that special place in my heart.

Naidre's is the perfect size, NOT TOO SMALL.. My preference hands down for consistantly good java made with care.

  • gimme!!!

    yes, gimme coffee!!

Grumpy Cafe in Greenpoint, on Meserole at Diamond st. A little bright but the peeps will definitely leave you to your hangover. Plus Thomas would never find you in Greenpoint.

nyc does have several truly world class shops, but it's a pity new yorkers themselves don't know about them. famous coffee people and professional baristi from all over the world travel to visit them, but most denizens of gotham still have no idea they exist.

for example, the east coast barista champion used to work at kevin cuddeback's gimme in bklyn. professional baristi from all over the world -- seattle, europe, australia -- make pilgrimages there because the technique, the coffee, the machinery is considered so perfect.

the same with kenny nye's 9th st. other respected shops are jonathan rubinstein's joe the art of coffee and cafe grumpy.

so espresso's covered. for lovers of beautiful drip-brewed estate coffees, oren's daily roast is the prize winner, literally. the world's most important coffee trade group gave oren bloostein a roasting prize recently for his amazing ethiopian coffee.

and still all most people talk about is the dog or d'amicos! amazing! with all due respect, the coffee at gorilla is sadly burnt.

we do have excellent coffee in nyc. perhaps someday new yorkers will learn about it.

The Hungarian Pastry Shop on the Upper West Side! Bottomless coffee and great atmosphere.

    I second Naidre's - Park slope style.

i second the gramstand on ave a. they have some crazy teas there that you can't get anywhere else. last time we had hangovers to cure we ended up with their paninis and 2 huge pots of their gramstandard black tea and a really yummy white one.

The Mud Truck does the trick. Gorilla Coffee, too.

Any Greek diner has great coffee!

Cocoa Bar is okay when it's not overrun with kids. They could stand to stop playing the Jack Johnson and Dave Matthews on endless repeat, too.

Jack's Stir Brew and Joe - both in the west village are very good.

As mentioned Grey Dog on Carmine (and soon to be University) is another good one.

9th Street Coffee: scruffiness appreciated; great coffee - don't bother asking for half decaf half reg - these kids are far to cool for that; benches outside for you, your doggy and hangover - wonders never cease in -8 topped off with a caffine jolt.

Gothamist, are you set on Brooklyn or open to options in Manhattan? I'm a fan of Mud in the E-Vill.

I second the Tea Lounge in Cobble Hill. The stroller set usually doesn't stick around very long when they realize the place is filled mostly with folks with books and laptops who don't think their kiddos are as cute as they do.

I like Cocoa Bar on Seventh Avenue in Park Slope. They have the Chocolatte! That's good whether you got a hangover or not.

its hard to find a good spot for tea in this city...but if you are an east villager - or if you are not but don't mind travelling for good tea and a good vibe...try the gramstand on avenue a between 13th and 14th. they used to have a tiny little store on irving but just expanded and opened up a bigger place with a bigger menu and really good pasteries. the tea is awesome - the owner really knows his stuff and the staff are young and friendly and happy to chat or leave you to read the paper. 214 avenue a...check it out!

  • avb

D'amico, brooklyn. That's where I went with my hangover this morning. Italian-family owned. If there's not enough seating, hit the new tea lounge in Cobble Hill (less pretentious than the one in Park Slope)

  • UES

DTUT on the Upper East Side (2nd ave btwn 84th and 83rd)
