NYPD Stops More Blacks Than Other Races

2007_01_nypdrnd.jpg

You've probably have thought that blacks are stopped many times more than whites, but now there are the numbers to back that up. The Police Department delivered four volumes of statistics to the City Council's Public Safety Committee that revealed some interesting statistics about police "stop-and-frisk" searches. five times more people were stopped in 2006 than in 2002. (Last year, 508,540 were stopped; in 2002, the police stopped a little under 100,000.) And of the half million stopped in 2006, 55% of the time, the "stop-and-frisks" involved blacks. Hispanics are stopped 30.5% and whites 11.1%.

The NYPD hasn't released a full year of data about searches since 2002. The NY Times reports that a 2001 law (created after the Amadou Diallo shooting) required the NYPD to release information four times a year to the City Council about "people who are stopped and questioned by officers, and the reasons for such encounters." Apparently, the main reason why people were stopped: They were "in a high crime area or had made 'furtive movements,''" according to the Daily News. Of those searches, 21,269 were arrested. And yet, as a Columbia professor who studied stop and frisks in 1999, pointed out that "stop rates went up by 500 percent when crime rates were flat."

The NYPD has denied racial profiling and that many of the stops were because crime victims will mention suspects of colors. But incidents like a captain telling officers to "stop all black teens" at the 7th Avenue subway station and the shooting of Sean Bell, have made the community wonder. 1010 WINS spoke to Reverend Al Sharpton, who said that pressure was unfairly applied to people of color.

The NYPD claims the delay in getting the numbers out is because of "antiquated technology." And the City Council is also being criticized for not monitoring (or badgering) the NYPD as it should have been.

That should be a bulge in a waistband is NOT enough for a stop.

I seem to recall last week crime was committed by white people, including murders. IN fact, a few were by cops or retired cops.

  • GUYK

But why did you omit why the majority stopped were black? "...68.5 percent of crimes involved suspects described as black by their victims..."

Is it racial profiling when the majority of the crimes are committed by blacks? Of course it is not politically correct to say this though, is it?

  • rodman's kneck

That's true, the GOOD cops know that a seeing a person with a bulge in his/her waistband is enough for a stop.

Again, I call for citizens to have technology on their side. Recording devices on your person, in your home and outside your home.

  • REALITY CHECK

Combing through masses of innocent people due to a suspect's vague description (such as black male) is not only illegal, it's lazy police work. If you haven't noticed, New York has the highest population of black males in the country, so it's definitely not specific enough to justify random frisking.

  • janus

They are searching them for pot because they can. legalize pot, and the searches will stop.

  • TGC

I say the NYPD should "stop & frisk" for coke & meth. Y'know, to even it out.

At least the inevitable first Nazi Germany reference could have been accurate.

flog, you just got on my list.

Thank God I live in an affluent area where cops are few. I used to live in the hood and cops would stop me for wearing a long coat. Not saying what neighborhood but it's not the "hood" you're thinking of.

When I first got my piece, I used to carry it to work everyday. Even stood next to cops and not one stopped me.

If you don't live in a bad neighborhood, STFU. I'm sick of people chiming in about how things go down in parts of town that they themselves never actually visit or experience. If you've never had to walk home from school past some projects and had your life threatened on a weekly basis by the people who gather in such areas, you don't know what it's like.

If random searches result in finding even one gun I personally thank of the police because that could be the gun used to kill me next week (or anyone else.) Uppity liberal blowhards sitting in their safe nabes or school dorms parroting the crap their professor preached the day before are rarely the ones in this predicament themselves. STFU!

These blog posts are written intentionally to lead to this "me against you" response we're getting right now. While entertaining at times, this just isn't productive. Shmurf seems to be the only addressing the actual issue, so I'll simply distill it all down:

Do cops need more sensitivity training? Yes

Have/do blacks commit a larger portion of the crime? Yes

Is racial profiling effective, no matter how wrong it is? Yes, but the real issue here is this cycle of inner city blacks committing crimes since the dawn of, well, inner cities. This is a problem that is being bandaided by racial profiling, but really needs to be cured at the source. Government intervention is needed to cure this ail of our society, providing proper education, jobs, movtivation and "an out" for those likely to get sucked into the never-ending cycle. Only then can we honestly put something like racial profiling in America to bed.

"Al, &Al Fundy" Ur both idoits ! Racial profiling can never be accepted on any level .You wouldn't say that if the cops pulled you over and surrounded you with there hand on the gun "Asking" if they could search you . I doubt if you would be happy if rich folk moved into your hood forcing you to pay higher rents because your landlord is choosing to seize moment, Or being priced out of your own hood .I know you wouldn't like that at all . You don't even have to be involved with any crime/profile they have on file . I don't care what ur Education, Status, or Race, We're all in the same f*cked-up boat ! Yes blacks do commit crime, That's obvious . Profiling will only enhance the view that the police are their to harrass ! What needs to be done is give them jobs, Yes I know some would prefer to lead a life of crime . For those that choose that lifestyle, Well there are plenty of cells awaiting them . That's just a percentage, I know most would jump at the chance to better themselves by making there money legally . That is, Provided the jobs are worth taking,(You knuckleheads need to understand that not everybody has the willpower to stomach a low paying job,& not to mention the stress just to make ends meet) Look at the current push for a raise in the base wages . Sadly, That was enabled not by the poor minorities, No, That came from the poor whites that are tired of living life with one foot in the door . Everybody wants to be respected & that starts with the most basic of respects . Being respected as a person !

"I put my life on the line everyday walking in front of those gun-toting thugs in blues without a gat of my own fo protection."

Son, until you strap on a uniform and take an oath to protect and defend...don't talk to me about putting your life on the line.

  • They were "in a high crime area or had made 'furtive movements

    Is this an exact quote?

Being in a in a high crime area is not reason enough to stop and FRISK someone.

Many law abidding people live and work in High Crime areas.

"im all for racial profiling. if a certain neighborhood has more crime, you obviously target that neighborhood to reduce crime. If a certain race causes more crime, you target that race. it's the kneejerk PCness of this country that prevents common sense to prevail."

Yes, and that's what they said in Germany from 1933 to 1945, and that got their country very far towards a low crime rate, right?

"Never Forget" applies to us all.

"They also put their lives on the line to protect us every day." ??? I put my life on the line everyday walking in front of those gun-toting thugs in blues without a gat of my own fo protection.

TV can't do racial profiling. It's too public. But police records aren't. To expose their actions like CSI or Law & Order here's a reality TV idea that would get huge ratings: take all the cameras that police use and turn them around to point at the police themselves.

  • gal in interracial relationshi

I completely believe this. My fiance is black and he gets stopped for stuff that if I was doing the same thing, the cops would smile and nod. We live up in Harlem and maybe that's part of the deal...but the feel from them is that you are guilty until they are proven wrong. It's sad...

TV can't do racial profiling. It's seen by too many people and they'd be called out on the carpet. But police records are largely unseen. To give them the same exposure as CSI or Law & Order here's a reality TV idea: all the cameras that police employ should be pointed at the police themselves.
