Ex-Husband Charged in Staten Island Murder

2007_02_galtieri.jpgRetired NYPD cop John Galtieri was charged with the murder of his ex-wife, Jeanne Kane. Kane was found shot at a Staten Island park-and-ride Tuesday night, as she waited for her daughter's bus to arrive.

Kane and Galtieri had a bitter divorce, with Galtieri upset at how much he was forced to pay her in the settlement. Galtieri, who had moved to Florida after divorcing Kane a few years ago, was arrested on I-95 in South Carolina the day after the shooting. Video surveillance cameras at the Pleasant Plains park-and-ride showed a car just like Galtieri's in the lot Tuesday morning and police believe he had been staking out the lot. Galtieri had been in Staten Island to file a lawsuit against Kane to avoid paying out a $1.1 million settlement. He had filed at least a dozen lawsuits with defendants such as Kane, her lawyers, the judge in their divorce, Police Commissioner Kelly, etc.

The judge in the Kane-Galtieri divorce found Kane had been a battered wife. The Staten Island Advance says that Galtieri's current wife was hospitalized after he pushed her to the ground, but she refused to file charges.
