A baby was found in a pile of garbage in a Bronx apartment building yesterday. The NY Times says the building's janitor Angel Torres "heard a loud thud" that "did not sound like trash falling," so he went to see what was in the bin. A baby, dressed in a pink coat and white jumper, had been thrown down the trash chute. Torres thought it might have been a doll, but then realized it was a real baby.
Investigators believe the baby was dead before it was thrown in the chute. A police dog was on the scene to find any trace of the baby at the building, but neighbors did not know of anyone in the building who recently had a baby.
Two other young children died in the past few days: A 1 month old Bronx boy seems to have been smothered while sleeping with his parents on Monday while a 1 year old Brooklyn girl was found dead of undetermined causes Sunday night.

There's something endemic about these 'baby in the trash' stories. I have to wonder if the mothers exist in a universe where people casually go missing and bits of miscellaneous gore are routinely chucked into dumpsters and trash cans.
before all the hate-filled morons start weighing in on this story, let me just say that this is a fucking tragedy. so sad... an innocent , helpless baby literally thrown away like garbage. what must be going through the minds of the people who did this? are they mentally ill? or simply so overwhelmed and ill-prepared to be parents that this act actually seems like a good idea???

It's not that simple, jammer. Obviously this can't be said for all cases but I can think of a few over the last couple of years where it turns out the "mothers" were actually little girls. (There was the 13-year-old who was recently busted throwing a newborn out the window. The father was a 23/24 year old man. There was the teen ager a couple of years back who threw not one, but two of her babies out a window into an empty lot below. They only found the first one [which had been killed a year or so earlier] after discovering the second one.) These young women are hardly women and they're abused by older men and then become pregnant. I think we need to try and stop that from happening because, chances are, if we did something about sexual abuse less babies might be found in the trash 9 months later.
I am not forgiving the girls for doing this, it's horrible, truly. But they aren't always grown women making selfish decisions. They're little girls.
