Hells Angels Club Raided After Woman is Beaten

2007_01_hells2.jpg

2007_01_hells1.jpgMore details have emerged about why the police raided the Hells Angels Headquarters on East 3rd Street yesterday. It turns out that 52 year old Roberta Shalaby was beaten into a coma when, as the Daily News puts it, she "tried to push her way into the Hells Angels clubhouse" Sunday night. Shalaby had gotten into an argument with a female Hells Angel biker at The Edge, and then followed them to their headquarters. Witnesses say she yelled, "You motherf----r! Let me in!" as well as "Come down here and say it like a man!" when someone from the club told her to shut up. Then someone came out and beat her up, according to police.

One witness said Shalaby had been crying, "Oh my God! Oh my God! Help me! Help me!" as she was bleeding on the sidewalk. Someone called 911 about the assault, and the police arrived. The Hells Angels allegedly told the police to get a warrant before entering, so they did, but not before sealing off East 3rd Street, setting up snipers, bringing the hostage negotiation truck, putting helicopters in the air and even having the "Bearcat" armored vehicle on the scene. Police officers were carrying machine guns and wearing bull-proof vests. There was no confrontation though - the police took a few men into custody, but only arrested one, without much fuss.

The Hells Angels's lawyer Ron Kuby complained that the police didn't allow gang members to move their cars, calling the street a crime scene, and said, "For most of the day and evening, they've turned a chunk of the Lower East Side into Fallujah." Finally, Kuby agrees with Giuliani on something! But in 1998, the city had to pay the Hells Angels $450,000 for "exceeding the scope of their warrant" while investigating another assault.

Our readers had some interesting thoughts about the Hells Angels. One wrote, "I lived in the building next door all last year and once, one of the hell's angels punched my mom's 65 year old boyfriend in the face because our car was next to their bikes while i was getting out." Another said, "I've lived in the east village for almost 20 years, my father for almost 35. I will miss the Hells Angels when I wake up the next day too another twenty thousand NYU students and jerkoffs from New Jersey who come into my neighborhood just to make noise and make a mess."

chicken head gang or hells anels All year I have been reading about hells angels in many states in court charged with murdering or molesting women and children. I just read about one mistrial the jury 8 guilty 4 not guilty for Robert Thompson California Hells angel accused of murdering 2 teenage girls. They will have another trail soon. The evident seemed overwhelming to me. Also they have a member Dave the hells angels president from Nevada is going to court for child Porn. The Police said He had many neat folders of child porn on his laptop. I think he was headed for a big hells angel’s event with the entertainment when caught with the laptop and cocaine. . Then we had the hells angel Daniel Roberts shoot a women in the back of the head in Maine get 55years then another member Russell Sinkis in Mass has 3 orders of protection from 3 different women and he is also charges with molesting a minor. Then theirs Paul Eischeids from Arizonian another member on the run charged with murdering a mother of 6 brutally. That’s just what I saw in the papers over the last year. I wonder how many I missed and how many went unreported. I remember 20 years ago in NY state they had another Hells angels President with child sex crimes and child porn. I can remember reading about family’s father’s mothers and children murdered by this gang.

All I know is all I see in the papers is hells angels all over the country in court for molesting and murdering women and children. Most are so out of shape that they can only beat a women or a child but thats not a good excuse for them to do that.

I personally feel that the Hells Angels are the only organization that have not yet been corrupted. They are the only organization to stick to their word, unlike the government and police, the hell's angels do not turn their backs on each other. They will take care of "their" families. That Roberta chick should not have been downtown in a bar at the age of 52 by herself starting shit, most likely drunk too. She got dealt with.

  • Dan Barney

Anyone stupid enough to try to force there way into a Hells Angels clubhouse deserves whatever they get! According to NY state law she should be charged with attempted burglary but I have a funny feeling that won't happen now will it !

  • john

Female Hells Angel??? There are none! This whole story is total bullshit.

  • in margharita east village

So Jimmy Buffet and Ed bradley are not "respectable people"?

Just like the Hells Angels, it's time for it to pass on. Unless, of course, they are more than a motocycle club.

  • carla

Hunter S. Thompson would really resent the implication that he hung out with "respectable people" at any time in his storied life....

  • hellz bellz and angelz

    Hell's angels, indeed.

    more like Hell's Faggots.

And let's put this "safest block" in the neighborhood line to bed, please.

I agree, a flashbang up their butts would be pleasure to see.

    NYPD confiscate the videotape.

  • No worries, deb! You are very right.

  • mikey

Fuck these dirty, white trash, cheap beer swilling goons. They should have smoked 'em out with a couple flash bangs and tear gas first, IMHO.

  • deb

Hey Elderta, yes sorry for the snark, but what other way to put it? You're right that there's crime in New York, but rest assured it's not nearly as bad as other cities as one would rather have you believe. NYC has such a bad crime-reputation mostly because the media here is over-obsessed with bad crime (NY Post for ex) when alot of GOOD actually does happen here. Gothamist can play an active role in turning the public opinion as opposed to jumping on the law & order bandwagon and reinforcing negativity. With that said, the Hells Angels need to get lives.

  • Old Timer

For the record, the Hell's Angels lost all of their credibility when they sold their air rights to the New York Law School.

One thing that can be said about the Angels is that back in the 'bad old days' of the neighborhood they kept third street relatively safe - as long as you were respectful.

I think they should all be held for beating that woman because who gives them the right to take things in there hands. They could have called for the police to help them but they fill like they are above the police.

  • warrants are not needed when there's a domestic dispute. being that the vic was found on the street and not inside may be diff, but usually polce wold go in a do a search. i bet that's why they called in negotiators and snipers.

  • what

anyword on why the doors were removed via power saw last night by the NYPD? Or what the story is with the 5 slot machines they removed from the building?

  • curious

Anyone know why the NYPD sawed off the front door and confiscated it last night? Also why hasn't the removal of the front door been mentioned in any reports? It was a pretty spectacular sight with the sparks flying... Also the police removed several air compressor tanks and about five slot machines(for gambling)from the building. Any word on this anywhere, anyone?

  • ewaewa

Hey Jen Chung, aren't you one of those "jerkoffs from New Jersey"?

  • salvatore

What kind of 52 year old WHITE TRASH goes around fighting in bars anyway? She deserved a severe beating. Send her back to her trailer with her tail between her legs.

  • jeebus

the edge is a shithole, hell's angels are manchildren/doofuses

  • Hell's Angels "complained that the police didn't allow gang members to move their cars"? Cars? Their street cred is totally depleted because of this.

  • ahem

Would you guys be quoting mystic "rules," fiction, and legends if these people on 3rd St. were a group of young black kids doing exactly the same things? Would you bemoan the "loss" of them as a fixture if hip-hop was blasting out of the speakers on the building? Hell no.

  • rip hunter

I'm not a fan of HST but I'm glad he turned his life around and hung out with respectable people in the end.

Hopefully the NYPD won't let up. Hit them with every violation in the book and bring in the DOB, too.

  • evan

the rule - described in hunter thompson's book - is if an an angel hits a non-angel, all angels present must join in.

  • nick

rule one: don't try to fight a hell's angel when there are others around.. hasn't this woman seen gimme shelter??

  • Elderta

Well, deb, there is a lot of crime in New York, yes? You make a good point (though maybe you could reconsider the for no-good-reason snark?).

  • The Edge

"but if it went bad people would complain that they weren't prepared properly."

    As always...

  • Wonder if Ron Kuby is an honorary Hells Angel?

Maybe the Police overreacted, but if it went bad people would complain that they weren't prepared properly.

  • deb

Well, as long as Gothamist starts looking more and more like the NY Post (ie crime obsessed) I guess we can all be happy right?

  • Elderta

Correction... I think the local news covered this on the 11:00 news yesterday, but nothing earlier than that, I think.

  • Elderta

I wish I had me one of those "bull-proof vests." In NYC, it might come in handy.

Seriously, that lady had some balls to try and get into the HA. Unfortunately, I don't think the HA handled the situation very well. Good grief.

On another note, kudos to Gothamist Contributors... Gothamist was the only source that noted the police coming out, and only two local news sources had anything about the lady found beaten on the sidewalk.
