Can Rev. Billy Save a Vegan Bakery?

2007_01_arts_revb.jpgWe received a press release about the closing of yet another establishment in lower Manhattan today. This time it's not a high profile venue like CBGB, but a little vegan bakery on St Marks that is being forced out due to high rent.

The League of Humane Voters of New York City (LOHV-NYC) and Rev. Billy are teaming up to save Whole Earth Bakery and Kitchen along with Council Member Rosie Mendez and Assemblyman Brian Kavanagh. The bakery, which has been opened for 16 years, is due to close March 31st. This weekend the above team will be calling on the bakery’s landlord, Friedman Management, to renew their lease and forego their eviction. The bakery owner will be on hand with hot cider and vegan food for everyone.

In August, the SuperVegan blog reported that at a Rev. Billy service "the congregation said amen when Peter Silvestri, owner of Whole Earth Bakery, announced that his landlord had just renewed his lease for another seven months."

The bakery provides more than just sweets, they also serve lasagna, pizza, smoothies and more (check out a photo gallery here). Get a vegan's perspective on the closing, here. And as another option for vegan sweets, Babycakes is still opened!

I swear, every time I see a picture of the Reverend Billy, I think it's a blond Michael Madsen...

Babycakes is most certainly not closed. Not at all, only last week they were on Martha TV showing their recipes. In fact, I'm heading there for my morning Banana Chocolate loaf now.

They are closed on Mondays, as many bakeries tend to be. I was in there a couple weekends ago and they were crazy busy. Saw the proprietor-baker on Martha and Martha was super effusive about the products. Would be a surprise if they shut down.

You'd think they'd be fine with their high rent, with the prices they charged. Go figure; Vegans don't like to pay a lot for stuff.

Come to think of it, I don't know of too many people who "like to pay a lot for stuff." Thanks for this item; I'm definitely going to check this bakery out.

carla, try the pumpkin spelt cupcake - it's awesome!

Peter's 94 year old Mom, Filomena Silvestri passed away last year and before the East Village's Vegan Earth Mother departed, she got a message from the community and that was over 1,000 signatures and a powerful piece written in Metro by Amy Zimmer. The landlord who is also a lawyer did something rarely done -- he gave Peter and Filomena an extension. Mrs. Silvestri felt the love and soul shining back at here from all here years of healthy soul food for the community.

That is what makes us the East Village and not NYU-ville.

Peter needs to find a new space for his Vegan baker by April 1. We are the East Village, although NYU has mega dormed us to death, we are a village and not nyu-ville so we worked together and got over a 1,000 signed petitions and Amy Zimmer did a great piece that may have given us a mini-miracle - an extenstion and Peter's 94 year old Mom who created the bakery got some of the love and good earth mom energy back as we fought for her and Peter. Peter needs help to find a home for the bakery here in the East Village. We don't want to lose him to high rents and mega retail.
