This story cracks me up. I moved back to NYC 3 yrs ago and moved in with a 'roommate' who said he was subletting from his nephew. Well he never moved anything in, I had the place to myself, and sure enough after 7 months the actual renters who lived in New Paltz! informed me I had to find another person to split the rent or else move. I considered blowing the whistle and informing the management corp. because I had heard others had similar experiences and won the apt. afterwards. But in the end I moved to spare myself the hassle. I ended up where I should be but reading about this took me back. The greedy landlords are a big reason behind the insane rents but illegal sublets have their part in it too.
