Bronx Child's Death Ruled an Accident

2007_01_elchavo.jpgThe tragic death of two year old Anthony Pena, who suffocated in a plastic storage container in his Bronx home, was ruled an accident by the ME's office.

The parents had put Anthony, his 6 year old brother, and 4 year old sister to bed, but the children got out of bed to play hide and seek. Little Anthony was left in a plastic toy storage container, with the top sealed, when his siblings forgot he was there and fell asleep. In the morning, the parents found Anthony, dead in the bin. The Post reports that the ME at Jacobi Hospital wouldn't let Anthony's mother hold him one last time. The Administration for Children's Services is still investigating the family.

Brother Alexis said they were also imitating El Chavo del 8, a Mexican show about an orphan who hides in a barrel. Two years ago, Slate wrote about the popularity of El Chavo.

    Ok, my bad.

  • David McCaffredy

The photo is from the TV show the children were imitating.

  • Jen Chung

That's actually a photograph of El Chavo, the show the children were supposedly imitating.

  • Mark Landau

I guess there were no funny "barrelful of monkeys" photos available.

Jen,I like your blog generally but I can't understand the thinking about putting a comical photo next to a tragic story involving a 6-year old.

  • What a horrible situation. I hope they get those kids help, after this, I think they'll really need it.
