Name That Baby Panda!

2007_01_panda3.jpg

In some Chinese families, some relatives are referred to by their birth order instead of a name, like "Number 1 Sister" or "Number 4 Brother." And this goes for baby pandas, too, as the Wolong Nature Reserve's Research and Conservation Center for Giant Panda scientists refer to the baby pandas born between July and September of 2006 as numbers 1 to 18. Eager to change this, the research center is asking the public to give these adorable cubs English names. Next thing you know, the Wolong Nature Reserve will be issuing panda plushes based on each one.

You can vote here at China Daily, where you can also see photographs and profiles of each one. It's baby panda heaven, and we know what we'll be doing all weekend.

The deadline is February 5. We've already named Number 12, pictured at top, "Basketcase," aka "Wicker," and Number 11, above, "Peek A Boo Buddy," or "Peeks" for short. Number 10 is clearly "Happy." (We feel like Flava Flav.) Three down, fifteen to go!

yeah. my parents call me number 2 son. Why do chinese people treat their children like robot slaves?

user-pic

butterstick jr., butterstick III, butterstick IV, butterstick V, butterstick VI, butterstick VII, butterstick VIII, butterstick IX, butterstick X, butter stick XII, butterstick XIII, and butterstick XIV.

This is easy, people. Name them after Chinese dissidents like Gao Zhisheng, Bu Dongwei, Chen Guangcheng, etc. I suggest we en masse submit the name "Gao Zhisheng". See here for info:
web.amnesty.org/library/Index/ENGASA170662006?open&of=ENG-CHN
There are plenty of examples on the amnesty webiste of other imprisoned dissidents or the heroes of Tianeman.

Or, if you don't feel like doing research, name them: "Free Tibet" "Free Taiwan" "Democracy Now" "Remember Tianemen" "Boxer Rebellion" "Free Butterstick"

You get the idea. Don't play their PR game.

I agree Hoodrat!
However, we really should ignore the ChiCom propaganda. We should not support this repressive regime who also cares nothing for the environment.

Man, when I went they wouldn't let anyone take photos of the babies. Rip off.

Personally I'm a fan of the Chinese names:

Qiuqiu, Dandan, Poopoo, Pipi, Lingling, Jingjing, etc.

gotta give jen some credit, she's shown some impressive restraint, it's been a long time since we've seen a panda post (no sarcasm). moderation is good.

damn cute bear btw.
