I shudder at the thought of Rochester garbage plates... Those are just disgusting. Take away the mayonaise soaked salads and hockey puck burgers, maybe I'd have a bite.

It seems to me that it more resembles Poutine or, as B said, garbage plate other regional creations by people who want a mix of comfort food served cheap and hot. The unhealthy-ness is just a side effect.

Upstate nyers (Rochester folks really) have their own version called trash or garbage plates. Those don't even HAVE vegetables except for french fries, just massive amounts of junk food piled up on a plastic picnic plate.

A few year's ago I tried the same in Colonia: I rented a moped and drove down the highway towards Montevideo. Why? Colonia was so BORING! It was winter and the main Plaza was too "sleepy"... I took some nice pics, but gave up about 3 miles from Colonia, it was freezing and the moped was about to run out of gas. Yes, I remember the only highliight was the food :-)

Holy shit, does that ever look delicious. South Americans really know how to eat. PS - grass-fed beef, the kind you get in Uruguay and Argentina, is markedly tougher than the "marbled" (read: fatty) beef Americans prefer.
