Newsday reports that NYPD Assistant Chief Bruce Smolka is retiring. While many officers Newsday spoke to love Smolka, he leaves behind an interesting legacy. Let's paraphrase Aaron Naparstek's 2005 piece about Smolka for the NY Press' 50 Most Loathsome New Yorkers issue:
...Smolka was the commanding officer of the NYPD’s infamous Street Crimes Unit. It was his officers who, in February 1999, pumped 41 bullets into Amadou Diallo, an unarmed African immigrant guilty of nothing more than standing in the hallway of his own apartment building....There are two lawsuits and other pending against Smolka. One pending lawsuit claims that Smolka grabbed a woman off her bike via the bike chain around her waist. Another lawsuit contends that Smolka kicked Cynthia Greenberg's head during a 2003 anti-war demonstration. Watch the video here, via I-Witness Video.
...In February 2003, Smolka illegally ordered horseback-mounted police to charge into a group of peaceful anti-war demonstrators...
...Architect of the Critical Mass crackdown...
...At a December 8, 2004 federal court hearing on Critical Mass, civil liberties lawyer Steven Hyman skewered the chief before federal judge, William Pauley. The day’s highlight was Smolka’s attempt to argue that seven bikes lined up on a New York City street are a “procession” requiring a permit while seven motor vehicles clogging the very same street are simply traffic...

If the rank and file cops are so fond of him, admire him and Take a bullet for him, Why are they so afraid to be named in the interview? It's not like he's a bad cop? right?
Him and perlman are alike. Just look at them.
Hope he dies from a heart attack upon retirement.
Considering the amount of money in lawsuits this guy is going to cost the city, I doubt he's going to be too sorely missed....
That guy totally looks like Vic Mackey in that picture.
That guy totally looks like Vic Mackey in that picture.

I got arrested at that protest. There were alot of assholes there (including me). Some of us had badges, others had black rags, most of us were high on something.
Wait, I thought Rudy Giuliani, Karl Rove, Dick Cheney, Mike Bloomberg, and George W. Bush were responsible for all of these things.
Rudy should hire him as a consultant for his Prez campaign. That way he can have both Bernie K. and Smolka on his payroll---two of NYPD's finest.
You'd think the old timers would feel like they're working in Disneyland with the way Manhattan is now. I guess they just miss giving somebody, deserving or not, a good kick in the face now and again. Makes you feel like you earned your paycheck.
I think we're at the point where the NYPD should be considering malpractice insurance for it's officers.
smolka never learned to ride a bike as a kid. stuck on a tricycle, he grew up to take it out on those that learned and dare to attempt to enjoy it. when he dies, it won't be an early death (upon retirement or today); he's already done so much damage. and bloomberg does nothing to fix it--actually endorses it.
yep, he really did give her a knee to the face. Fucking cops, some are good, thinking individuals, but most are just fucking meatheads that see all of us as the enemy.
It's sewerage like this that gives just, hardworking cops a bad name. Makes me angry. I hope he suffers for his crimes, but even more, I hope we learn to stand up and stop "people" like this from doing what they do.
I guess it takes a protest, for each bad cop, to show the politicians who's boss (clue: "The People"). We may need to protest without a permit, so bring a helmet.
I treat every police officer I meet with respect and courtesy. If one doe's something illegal like running a red light without sirens, or with sirens and then turning them off, or another traffic violation, this respect dissapears.
holy smolka
good riddance
I'm glad these suits are in Federal court. we the taxpayers will be paying for his actions for years to come. Be it in taxes or cuts in other essential services.
It will also cost the DEA and PBA memebers, I bet their union dues go up to pay for the lawyers representing these bad cops. Last I've heard, them PBA dues are quite hefty.
He looks more like Bruce Cutler than TJ Mackey.
Or, should I say the LI party host in the Seinfeld episode And AKA the commish.
It's posters like #13 that we need some cops such as Smolka to knock some heads when it's needed. Especially the holier than thou Critical Mass morons and any far-left protestors who are just loud and disruptive to regular tax paying NYers.
Most cops are good guys and they want to do good work. That said, it's easy to get fed up with the people you serve in ANY job. The fact that one of the figureheads for the NYPD is such a loathsome, shitty example of law enforcement is not only troubling on it's own, but for the example it sets and the image it projects of the NYPD. Let's get this guy the hell out of here, yeah?
this proves my theory that having a K in your last name signifies evil...Kerik, Smolka, Krupke...
Hitkler.
There once was a man named smolka
who hated the bikes but loved polka
he said with a grin
as he cracked a head in
this is more fun than snorting coca!
