Ready for I Am Legend Action At the Brooklyn Bridge?

2007_01_iaml1.jpg

Possibly to pre-empt freaked out phone calls to 911, the production folks from the Will Smith film I Am Legend have alerted not only residents and businesses downtown and near the Brooklyn Bridge, but the major papers to to tell everyone not to freak out if they see Black Hawk helicopters, tanks, military activity, hundreds if not thousands of people, and lots of lights near the Brooklyn Bridge. Because it's just filming, not an actual invasion of zombies looking for an Oscar. While it'll be a pain in the ass, we prefer this to the crappy fake NYC backlots in Hollywood. Then again, we pray there are no actual emergencies to tend to while filming is tying things up - like another mercaptan smell that needs to be investigated.

I Am Legend will be filming around the Brooklyn Bridge for the next week. Though the city's Department of Transportation says all should go well, when Newsday asked what the filming "will do to the already nightmarish traffic" and an NYPD official said, "Good luck."

Of course, many people are already familiar with chaos from I Am Legend filming around town, whether it's zombies or straw and apocalyptic detritus. Here are some of our favorite I Am Legend pictures: Top photograph of cab hanging over Grand Central overpass by marianne.oleary, a burnt out car by New York Daily Photo and the Garibaldi statue lit up by film by Bill Shatto.

And send us ones you take of this week's filming by sending them to photos(at)gothamist(dot)com or tagging them on Flickr with "gothamist."

Is this a remake of The Omega Man ?

Is this the same film crew that has blocked off the East Side Greenway bike path under the Brooklyn Bridge for a MONTH AND A HALF? Cyclists who travel here are now forced out into some very dangerous traffic feeding in and out of the FDR and Bklyn bridge. Would the city close a street for this length of time for a production crew

Is this a remake of The Omega Man ?

Basically, yes, though I'm sure there'll be some differences.
The Omega Man was a very good movie that does not need to be remade. Chalk this up to the play-it-safe mentality that's taken over the movie industry. Churn out remakes and sequels rather than actually taking any risks.

I think this is a remake of Tha Last Man On Earth, released in 1964.

Author Richard Matheson's 1954 novella "I Am Legend" has been butchered on film three times: in 1964, 1971 and the most recent of which is this Will Smith in-name-only debacle. It could have been worse---at one time Arnold Schwarzenegger was slated to play the lead! Matheson's clever twist on the vampire tale is still in print and it's only about 160 pages---do yourself a favor and pop over to B&N and pick up the original work and skip the overblown Hollywood explosions, machine guns and muscle cars in Smith's version, which has little to do with the novella' s interesting character study.

This movie seems to be shooting for years already.

More images of I Am Legend filming from Washington Square Park back in October over at shedwa.blogspot.com just search for I Am Legend.

Some new filming pics at dread central right now. lots of military stuff.

I saw the Omega M.... what do I remember the eyes ( all white light like a demon) and people
walking around...the mutants....;How many versions are there of wars....? The film is intended for entertainment, not a document on survival on ChemicalWarfare agents, for that you
would have to go to the Database of Defense Department and see how all the population in USA or any part of the globe can counter Chlorin, Toxins, and all bio-chemical weapons and agents in the market of future War. How many versions of Walden Two do I see in the film industry ?
We cannot Maintain Continuity at all Times because we are agents of change. Nada es immutable y todo es mutable. So to those Pseudo-purist....we( BG) also want to play in
movies I don't care how many positions you have
seen it, I still like doing it...!
