Extra, Extra

  • Today on the Gothamist Newsmap: an electric shock at 10 Penn Plaza, a fall victim down a hole at Beaver and William Street, and a person stuck between train cars at 96th Street on the 2/3.
  • A tip from Marianne, via Gothamist Contribute: "The public should not be alarmed by activity beginning tomorrow in the vicinity of the Brooklyn Bridge. Beginning tomorrow at 4:00 PM, Tuesday, January 23, and continuing on weekdays through January, a movie being made in the vicinity of the Brooklyn Bridge will employ flood lighting, Army and Coast Guard helicopters, mock police and military vehicles, and over 1,000 extras for an evacuation scene." That's for I Am Legend, starring Will Smith-- the same film that recently took over Washington Square Park for a week.
  • Bluejake, Streetsy, F-Train have some pix from the Batcave, an abandoned powerstation in Gowanus.
  • Sad news for Sheepshead Bay: Lundy's is closing, for a second time.
  • Charlie has pix and a short video up from No Pants 2k7-- apparently 300 people participated this year!
  • DUMBO NYC has a fun series of then and now shots from around the neighborhood-- not so many yuppies on the street in 1938!
  • Fun with your computer printer and wheat paste: public rasterbation.
  • Miss USA is out of rehab and back in NYC-- if you see her, don't offer to buy her a drink.
  • Park Slope rejoice: the future Whole Foods site on 4th Avenue has been declared safe by the state: "While not all the contaminants - which include benzene, PCBs and the metal cadmium - will be completely eliminated, a cleanup plan calls for removal of two oil drums and tainted soil up to 10 feet below ground. The agency already has removed 11,000 square feet of contaminated dirt."
