Extra, Extra

  • Today on the Gothamist Newsmap: a "fall victim down a hole" on 2nd Ave at 65th Street, a "fall victim off a bridge" in Queens, and a riot at a D train station in Brooklyn.
  • Paging Copyranter: "Quite possibly the best subway ad EVER!"
  • Convicted child-murderer Joel Steinberg was ordered to pay $15 million to the birth-mother of his illegally adopted daughter Lisa. The city has already paid Michele Launders $985k for its failure to protect the little girl.
  • Another great map from OnNYTurf: the NYC No-Freedom Zones mashup shows which City Council members support the NYPD's efforts to crack down on protests and marches.
  • Here's a new idea in low-income housing: "courtyards and roof gardens that would be used for everything from harvesting rainwater to farming vegetables and fruit... an outdoor amphitheater, apartments designed for breezes, a fitness center, wiring for Internet access, “live-work units” for people who work at home, stoops with photovoltaic canopies, even a Christmas tree farm.
  • Big Stink: 1, Local Environmental Officials: 0-- "We have done the extensive lab analysis, and there is nothing conclusive as to a particular chemical signature from the samples we took."
  • Partying in NYC on $5: Gray's Papaya, a visit to the Met, and a ride on the PATH train to Hoboken. Fun!
  • Insane neighbor in Astoria: a life in letters.
  • New York has the nation's "strongest rental market," because renting in New York is still so much cheaper than buying: "there needs to be two to three years of solid rental growth, and then people will start saying that owning makes more sense."
  • The Old King Cole painting at the St. Regis is getting its first makeover since the 1950s-- at a cost of $100,000.
  • And finally, could Queens Councilman John Liu be considering a run for mayor? He's raised more than $1 million for an "undetermined race".

I'm not sure how you get a "riot at a D train station" from the news feed that says "large crowd."

"And finally, could Queens Councilman John Liu be considering a run for mayor? He's raised more than $1 million for an "undetermined race"."

It's been determined to be for the "Asian Race".

Johnny Liu? You mean, the one who has presided over the Fedderzation of Flushing?

FNY will use its minuscule influence to encourage anybody but Liu.

Given the fact that John Liu has been getting as much TV face time as humanly possible in the past year or so he has been running already.

"strong rental market"? that's a bright side if ever i heard one. just because it costs more to buy than to rent, doesn't mean that the renting is good. sounds like the industry people are just trying to find a way to make us average renters that something good is happening...

John Liu is an even worse media whore than Chuck Shumer. At least Chuck is backed up by a productive record and not crackpot goose chases. Please please PLEASE don't elect him mayor.

meh. The idea's there, but the execution/layout blow.
