People Who Make Us Sick
- This past weekend, a Queens man was arrested for animal cruelty. Oswald Joudan faces up to a year in a prison and a $2,000 fine for a number of terrible things he did to his Chow Chow "Lumpy" (pictured). A neighbor called the ASPCA, which found the dog so badly beaten that its face is distorted. The dog was also starved to the point of being 30 pounds (!!) underweight and had a 14-inch collar on the its 17-inch neck that was so restricting that it was embedded in the flesh. The dog needed 100 stitches to close up the wound. The ASPCA will determine whether the dog, who has a "great disposition" and will be renamed, can be adopted, but in the meantime, you can call 212-876-7700 to find out.
- With deer encroaching on parts of Staten Island, it seems that some residents have the hunting bug. The flaw in that thinking is that hunting is totally illegal in NYC. One resident says, "The point is, if you're a hunter, what's your great accomplishment hunting on Staten Island?"
- And a pit bull was sexually assaulted in NJ. The Humane Society is looking for suspects and say that two women saw the dog being sodomized but did nothing.
Top Dog Breeds
- The American Kennel Club announced that the number one dog breed in NYC is the poodle for the second year in a row (the number one dog breed in the country is the labrador retriever). The number two breed is new: The Yorkshire terrier, whose ascent might be due to it's good size for city apartments.

- And mark your calendars: Hill's, maker of Science Diet pet food, is launching a mobile tour to educate pet owners about chubby pets. According to a press release, "just five extra pounds on a medium size breed like a Beagle is the equivalent of nearly 25 pounds on an average woman" while "four extra pounds [on a Siamese cat] equals 45 pounds on an average woman." Ack!
Dog owners will be able to bring their dogs to be weighed and for the "interactive experience"; cat owners are recommended to leave cats at home since they get jittery and to bring photos instead - "two views -- one from the side and one from the top works best." The tour will come to NYC May 2 through May 22, and there's more information about pet diets at Hill's PetFit site.

The penalty for animal abuse should include mandatory sterilization. If you're willing to abuse an animal, you've pretty much proven that you can't be trusted with children.

Its eyes say everything. I wish I had a magic wand to make it healed. People suck.
why would anyone beat such a cute dog???? if the dog aggravated you that much (to the point of abusing it) then wouldn't you just give it away? he'd be better off in a shelter( with a chance of being adopted) than with that abuser!
This poor animal was doomed at naming.
I'd like to nickname its owner "Prison-Rapey."
I hope that poor Chow Chow makes a full recovery and finds a good loving home. And that someone kicks the owner's teeth in.

This is such a sad story. I hope this dog goes on to be adopted by a good loving family. I wish I could adopt him but I already have two.
I'm giving them extra hugs tonight.
Some friends of mine adopted a chow who was in an abusive home (though not as bad as this one) not too long ago that turned out to be a great dog...

the chow story is horrific. bastard abuser. but but, what about the dog sodomizing? see the next item and read the article. do you have to see a picture to understand the brutality? a pit bull puppy was sexually assaulted. i guess it's not cute enough to warrant a compassionate comment.
I feel sorry for the Chow but not as much for the pit bull. She totally had it coming, sashaying about in that revealing get-up.
In all seriousness, I didn't see the pit bull story when I first scanned the post. It's absolutely revolting. I agree with the poster who suggested that animal abusers should be sterilized (at least) if not put down themselves. Society doesn't need that shit and if you're doing stuff like that you're too far gone to salvage. Don't they say that animal cruelty is a gateway to serial murder?
anonymass, i can see how the pitbull one was easy to miss. sorry to all for attacking with my last comment. i was just so pissed when i read that article. sterilization sounds good. how about we strip these guys, wrap some salami around their hoohoos and set some dogs loose on them.
I'm not a pet person and don't even really like dogs - these stories *still* chill me to the bone. How could somebody victimize something so powerless? It's totally a gateway crime to murder, too. Gross.

If they need more money to add to their award money being offered in finding the pit bull abuser, I bet if you were to start a PayPal account and ask for donations letting your readers know that all money will be added to the 5,000 the Humane Society already put up, I bet you'd nearly double that amount.

This guy should be horsewhipped, literely. I sat here with tears running down my face as I read and looked at the Chow Chow. I have a neighbor who abuses a beautiful Alaskan Husky and I can't seem to get anyone to do anything about it. Makes me ill. People like this should be hung from a tree and let the wild animals chew on them.
We have billions of laws and gargantuan bureauracy to protect the safekeeping and flow of money and little to no protection for living beings including humans. Revolution anyone?
