On the one-week anniversary of the noxious natural gas-with-mercaptan stink that took over Manhattan, eastern NJ and parts of other boroughs, we thought that new NY State homeland security chief Michael A. L. Balboni had an interesting idea. The NY Times reports he expressed frustration about the lack of an answer, “What if next time it smells like almonds and it turns out to be cyanide?” He also said he would "put people’s feet to the fire" to get to the truth.
Dude, feet + fire probably = stinky, too. At any rate, we applaud his interest in getting to the bottom and would also like him to look into the Mysteriously Recurring Case of the Maple Syrup Smell. And we're keeping tabs on the crazy Austin bird deaths (also from last Monday). Attacks on East Coast noses and Texan birds should not be ignored!
The Daily News interviewed a Con Ed mechanic, whose job is to respond to gas leaks. David Rosario said he found nothing last week and that the worst smell he ever encountered was a dead rat that a "lady mistook...for a gas odor." Uh oh - could that have been the smell? The many corpses of rotting rats in the sewers?

you know they did this smell thing to us just to observe & study how we'd all react.
just another reason to dislikey bushy boy.
I vote that its the terrorists checking our air flows, reaction, etc.
I'm certain that the source is known but disguised for one of several possible reasons, most of them nefarious.
If this guy gets a straight answer out of anybody I'll be absolutely amazed.
The fact is it's a disgrace that no one knows where the smell came from — and this is no joke.
Of course, when the s--- goes down, I'm not going to rely on Bloomberg or anyone in goverment to tell me where to go, realizing that its going to be every man for himself.
This once again proves it. When news first broke, there was no one to tell anyone what to do or where to go, if it was safe to continue on to work or just go home, etc. The only news you could get was on 1010 WINS, with no comment from our "leaders."
Just goes to show you how unprepared the government really is.
And a week later they STILL don't know what happened?
Scary stuff.
I've been curious if the 'stink' settled in Brooklyn off of Tillary near or in front of the courthouse by the park.
(I'm serious)
Its still there and hasn't gone away.
Relax, my pig-eating friends. There is NO reason whatsoever to feel worried. And MUCH less trying to discover where it comes from. Smells come and go all the time.
It's nothing. Nothing at all.
Regarding new bird deaths...

"On Monday, Jan 8, 2007 there were reports of what appeared to be a gas leak in New York City and nearby Jersey City. No gas leak was ever found. Rochester, NY reported 4 broken water mains during this same time frame. Marine tankers report their alarms for methane going off, but no leaks found. About a dozen people were taken to hospitals complaining of breathing problems. Then the reports from around the world started pouring in, all seeming to be happening simultaneously. Italy evacuated people from Genova and Bologna due to gas leaks, an explosion killing one. London closed their tube lines due to suspected gas leaks, smells. Australia had water main breaks in Adelaide, and gas smells evacuated a mall in Perth where several were hospitalized as a result. No gas leak was ever located. Here in the US reports came in from Ohio smells, and a factory explosion, cause unknown. Nashville, TN, gas line leak. Mobile, AL gas leak. Blue Springs, MO gas leak with explosion and evacuation. Dallas, TX smells and in Houston a factory fume leak, cause unknown, and in Austin dead birds, cause unknown. Albuquerque, MN city evacuated due to gas smells. Half Moon Bay, CA evacuated due to smells, Santa Barbara marine tanker alarms due to methane, no leak found, and Oxnard freeway closed due to gas main break. So what is causing this sudden release of methane, along with obvious gas and water main breaks and factory explosions. Also, is this methane from the Earth making people sick, and killing birds?"
